Tyre question, with a difference....

Im close to needing 4 new tyres.

Now, unlike most, I'n not interested in track day levels of grip etc, I want a comfy tyre! Currently fitted are P Zero Neros, great tyre all round etc but I'm hoping to find a tyre that will help absorb some of the harshness of the Cup chassis! The chassis is great when you're in the mood but day to day it can be tiresome, in the past, a softer wall tyre has helped.

So I'm after a softer walled performance tyre, there is lots of tyre experience on this forum so feel free to recommend a tyre, price not important.

My instinct is to go for the Yokohama S Drive which I've used on a few similar cars and is very compliant, as well as being a very grippy tyre. But if there are other tyres that fit the bill out there, I'd like to know about them.

I believe the TR1s are soft walled, anyone run these after a harder walled tyre and can comment?

Yoko s have a very hard side wall to be honest. A comfey tyre doesnt really come from the side wall but of course it helps not having a reinforced one. Personally i would go the the sport contact 5 as they are recommended now the 3s are unavailable.

Hello mate I work for a tyre dealership and seeing hundreds of tyres day in day out Michelins by far and away have the softest sidewall out of any tyre manufacturer! I was on a course not long back that proved it! If u grab a loose tyre off the rim and push down on top of it the Michelin will squash but 100% of the tread will stay in contact with the floor, compared to cheaper brands if u do the same almost every brand will crease down the centre of the tread lifting it on the floor (road) so if its all round performance and comfort with a soft sidewall there's only 1 winner

I've got the Conti Sport Contact 5s on each corner (ones Gareth mentioned) and I have no complaints.

I'm in a similar boat, don't do track days and use the clio as a daily driver.

No complaints from me with them! Good in the wet, great when it's dry and the ride doesn't seem too harsh either.

my experience with michelin Pilot Sport 2 were quite the opposite. had them fitted on my mothers Meg F1 and they had quite stiff sidewalls, which I instantly missed after fitting a set of toyo T1-R which have rather soft walls...

I had some yokohama pradas that had really soft sidewalls but i would'nt recomend them as a road tyre in the wet.

I remember GY F1 Asymetric as more comfortable than Potenza RE040 for instance... Michelin PS2 and PS3 are also ok. I am currently rollin' on Potenza RE002 and they are not too harsh.

Cheers guys, plenty to think about there! I have a few miles left in the PZeros and they'll be coming off to be replaced by winter tyres soon. I had a punt in a colleagues 197 FF this week with TR1s fitted, seemed fine, although no Cup suspension so hard to get a real idea, definitely a softer tyre though. I like the Contis too, I'll probably go for them in the end but in the mean time I'll keep researching!
