'Stretching' sound when turning right slowly

Hi guys,

I'm getting kind of a stretching sound (its hard to explain) when turning right slowly, ie turning in to a parking space reasonably slowly. Its like something's being pulled that doesn't want to be. I had both springs replaced last year and both look fine. Definitely not tyres rubbing off anything either.

Any thoughts?

Does it sound like a ford fiesta at full lock?

:smiley: Its totally fine at full lock. Just as you accelerate away at about half lock, say you've just reversed out of a parking space and are now driving off to the right.

Sounds like a bottom ball joint, jack the wheel up off the ground and grab it at the bottom and see if there is play in it

That or the bearing on top of the shock means taking a look but the weight must be on the wheel for a true check the wheel hanging off the ground you will hear nothing common mistake when looking for 197 suspension noises. Could also be loose bolt on the steering rack or column.

Well get it checked and fixed take it to a specialist they will confirm and might be quicker time wise (per hour) to fix it and some can replace the ball joint so you don't have to replace the assembly, I changed mine myself you need a hydraulic bench press and heat to remove the ball joint and fit a new one as a backup I had a replacement full assembly so if it went wrong a broken bolt etc. I could get the car back on the road with the spare which I had already fitted a new bottom ball joint into. My plan was to sell it on when finished, also when I got the car the paperwork had a bill for £660 for the passenger side one by Hurst's Renault dealership in Belfast. I fixed the drivers side for £80 (balljoint) although I needed an hydraulic hub puller as I could not slide the driveshaft from the hub bearing although the passenger side pushed out with my thumb. You don't need to drop the sub frame I took shock and hub assembly all out and fixed it away from the car do a dry run loosening the different bolts before removal the pinch bolt has hex head and is easily rung I ground the head off to disassemble and there was enough thread out the back to remove the rest of the bolt after.

If it's bottom ball joint Aaron's autos in Derby are about as cheap as your going to find to do it, they replace just the joint. I traveled 2 hrs to them, took them a morning to do and I think it was £175
90% of places will change the whole hub because that's all renault will supply them with so I understand, so it will be upwards of £500

Most high street garage won't entertain trying to change just the ball joint, it's easier for them to order the part (6) on the diagram and fit that. But that part costs ~£200 and that's just for one side!

Arrons Autos in Derby is a good shout IF your in the area, according to their website it's £175 per side inc VAT and a 12 month warranty which is fairly decent given that the ball joint costs around £70-£80. The other option would be to find out where the nearest Renault sport specialist is to you and ring them for a quote on changing just the ball joints.

The ball joint that is likely to have gone is shown here:

Both of mine went within about 4-5 months of me buying the car last year, luckily I'd taken out a 12 month used car warranty which basically paid for itself. They paid out to have both the ball joints changed at a local specialist to me once they found out how much it would cost to buy the entire hub unit and have it done at Renault lol. Quite bad really though, loads of the 197s and probably the 200s are going to have this issue as they age. Mines an 07 plate and only had 58k on the clock when they started showing signs of going and making noises! - Clearly a bad design from the get go I think!

Unfortunately I live in Dublin. The guys I go to are pretty good and thorough so hopefully changing just the joint wont be an issue. I had that hub replaced last year! Grrr...

Thanks guys. I had that offside hub replaced last year because there was a crack in it. Mine is 07 as well and only has 45k on the clock.

Funnily enough there was no noise at all from it yesterday.

Seeka I'm in Cookstown the noise will come and go at the start but you need to be sure it is the bottom ball joint and if your going to do the job change everything you can within reason the drop links as they maybe unwilling to come off I used Lemforder 2949101 & 2551302 at the time mister auto were selling them half the price of the genuine ones and were an exact match right down to the yellow rings around the boots and back caps which I'm sure they make the genuine ones as well now just looking they are about the same price as genuine. Yea that Arrons Autos and on ebay rentec sell the inner hub with a new ball joint and ALS Performance have both sides sell the full assembly inner outer wheel speed and bearing with all that http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Renault-C...ub-Assembly-/232046616825?hash=item36070e60f9 . I have a spare inner hub with an original ball joint sitting in the garage as well as a full assembly with both hubs like ALS sell I even have 2 lower ball joints brand new I have not fitted yet my plan was to aqua blast them and sell them on with new ball joints fitted as I have already pressed a new one into mine a year ago and is a good job but you have to be careful they don't press in at 90 degrees and tube could easily damage the new bearing or the hub if they are not watching or thinking.

My mech changed that hub last year with a brand new Renault one. Does the hub come with ball joints attached or does it sound like the original one is still on the car?

Cheers.

Look at the diagram that's the way Renault sell them the outer hub the tall one has a ball joint, and the inner one has a ball joint its normally the inner one that's changed but if you have not even jacked the wheel up and looked there is no point talking about it until you know what's wrong a one year old hub should not fail unless its the other side that's gone it could still be the power steering, the bearing at the top of the shock or anything.

Thanks. I'm not very mechanically minded so you'll need to bare with me. So I should jack up the car and see if there's play in the wheel?

Its definitely this noise though..
