Sideshowfreds Ultra Red 200 -- Fully Caged Track Toy

i knew these cars were slow sellers but having only had one message about it in 6 weeks has been a real eye opener. After a very enjoyable drive in it a couple of weekends ago i have decided that if it doesn't get any more interest in the 16 days left on the Pistonheads ad then i will be keeping the car. I just need to change a few things to make it more enjoyable on the road again. Things like a more playful tyre than the Ad08R's are, getting some non-winged bucket seats to ease access and probably some more road friendly brake pads. It's also likely that the car will go on a couple of road trips this year, South Wales planned for August and North Coast 500 planned for early November!

You will probably enjoy it more by making it more road friendly.
I did with mine

Exactly my current thoughts. I don't mind the full cage on the road but the winged seats are a real pain at junctions. I also have previous experience of leaving track tyres on the car for road use which made it boring, putting it back onto some worn in Goodyear road tyres really made the car dance about again at lower speeds.

A small update from the weekend. The search for some new more usable seats came to a very quick end with a winning bid on some rather lovely Sabelt. I have always been a fan of their products but these to me really are something else. Sabelt Titan Carbonio seats out of a Ferrari 458 Challenge car. They are also good in the sense of being 'gentlemen racer' sizes.

Saturday consisted of putting them into the car then I decided to look at putting the boot net back in. Whilst doing this I also decided to stick the rear door cars in to try and reduce the noise levels anyway I could. This was followed by putting the boot carpet back in place and trimming round the cage footplates as with the road trips planned I don't want bags sliding all over the bare floor.

Anyway to get the roof lining back on also?
I was surprised how much sound the carpet and roof lining actually get rid of.
Makes it feel less tinny

Unfortunately with the cage i have in the car the roof lining is a no go. I need to see how it is first when i get the chance to take it for a run.

Being stuck at home does have some perks I suppose. With the car as my daily again (easy at the moment to live with!) I thought it deserved a proper wash. This has to be the first time in 2 years that I've done more than a wash and some quick detailer. It was given a good wash, some fallout remover then waxed. I must admit it looks so much better for it.

I also got round to fitting the Cup Racer pedal covers. Being a bit wider than the standard ones it should make my rev matching attempts quite. A lot easier.

Covid-19 lockdown update!

As seems to be the trend with the lockdown, being on furlough has meant I've had time to do things to the car. After I accidentally sold my daily car to my neighbour I was ready to buy an MX5 to run around in. But we entered lockdown and I soon realised everything within budget was an absolute shed.

So I decided that I would run one car again, it's much cheaper after all.

Onto the jobs, the car has had new inner and outer tie rods. I then decided to finally get some coilovers sorted. I went for GAZ Golds with their own adjustable top mounts.

Its taken me a week to fit them with a couple of issues appearing. Firstly they sent the n/s damper out without a bumpstop. Very quickly solved so that was all good. Then the steering UJ nut and bolt decided to strip its thread.

But today, finally done! Having set them at around half way it was disappointing to see it was about the same height as before. So this morning I thought I would wind it down a bit. It probably won't stay at this height and it needs alignment doing but that can come later.

More progress today. Had a trip down to Northampton Motorsport and was booked in for wheel alignment although I also got talked into having it corner weighted whilst it was with them. I was planning on getting it done at some point so made sense whilst it was up on the scales and everything is fresh underneath. I would love to have got some better pictures of this all happening but quite rightly I wasn't allowed in the workshop due to social distancing. I did watch from outside though as I find it quite interesting to watch things like this.

Excellent job done by them and the whole thing was done quicker than I imagined it could be.

Having now been out for an hours worth of 'exercise' i have truly fallen back in love with this as a road car. The damping with the gaz is so much better, although I have only left it in the softest setting for now. Can't wait to get back out on track now.

How much did it weigh overall?
Quite a lot! I wasn't surprised by this though as other than removing interior bits to fit the roll cage I've not really done and weight saving measures on it. And roll cages aren't exactly light.

It has made me start to thing about what I can do that will help shed some kilos off though.

Also, bear in mind that they put 95kg in to add some weight in to compensate me sitting in the car

That’s not too bad then... mines 1143kg with half a tank (without me) stripped with a full cage.
I'm more than happy with it for now especially given the full cage. I think it'll stay in this iteration for a while now before I no doubt start trying to reduce the overall weight in the future.

its hard to get much more weight lost unless you start going mental. Polycarbonate windows.
Fibreglass doors, boot and bonnet.

I had all the brackets And sound deadening cut out, whilst you have a bolt in cage you could easily enough turn it back to standard.

depends how far you want to go

Thanks, very interesting

I'm really interested for towing weight primarily, so comparing with yours and Beanys, I think mine (stripped with basic 'oulton' rear cage) would be about 1125-1150kgs. This is ok for the limit of my current tow car (trailer is 550kg or thereabouts) at 1800kg limit, although it does tow really badly unless I get the postitioning just right. It does rule out a few of the options I had been considering for my next car and I need to think carefully about what cage I get as I would like to get a better one.
