Strangely enough I had both these cars in mind a few years ago. Eventually it came down to a choice between a Boxster/Cayman for back roads fun or an E Class Convertible for European touring & as my daily. The Merc dealership where I ended up had both a Boxster & E convertible in stock & I decided that the E met my requirements better having driven both. However I still needed a car for back roads fun & that led to buying the Clio a couple of years later in addition to the Merc. I still have the Cayman itch to scratch though. In your position, assuming that the daily/family car is covered in the Shulver household that's the route I would be taking. You can have an ordinary, very capable, hot hatch in the Fiesta, or something truly special that all petrolheads would appreciate.

They are a little different agreed; but would be bought per-se to encapsulate a total budget. To include an Enduro bike at this stage or not accordingly. But in essence are both entirely 'drivers' cars. One as a cheap-for-what-it-is daily (Fezza); and one to be used on a Sunny Sunday blat....

I've pretty much decided on the Cayman at this point anyway. If i don't now i might never....

Boxster or cayman would get my vote ! Utterly absorbing to drive , look great , sound great . As you can tell I’m a fan !!

At the moment I’ve got two serious considerations in mind. Which on paper are poles apart. But in essence are both supposed to be great drivers cars. And would follow on from the Clio being a real drivers car in different ways....

1. A fiesta ST. I could get something 6 years newer with say 20k miles on the clock for £10k. Can get them to 240bhp easily / cheaply / reliably and would be a fun daily. Supposed to be a good hoot. I could then scrape to an off-road bike right away.....

2. A Porsche Cayman. Would need £15-£17k for a decent age / spec / mileage and would be everything I got right now without borrowing. Supposed to be raw, amazing build quality - and if anything like Boxster S’s i’ve been in handles amazingly. On paper for a supposed true performance car: about the slowest you can buy for that money. But as with the Clio - we all know that just quoting performance figures doesn’t tell the whole story....

Much pondering to do.

I can understand why the fiesta is on the list, but if I had to pick between those 2 (well even if you added in more cars) I would pick the Cayman, it's a lovely car and it will get under your skin, the torque makes it great to poodle around in and daily / long miles, but then it is so much fun too, a great car all round and still one of my fave Porsches.

I think most people will say the same, as it's like two kind of extremes lol, also I think the Fiesta will not live up to the Clio for you, I know you can get 200+ bhp easy, but it's not the same as the Clio.

One Month and one Day AC. Thats 'After Clio'

And i've not missed it one iota. That alone is enough to tell you our time was up. In saying that i'll happily reiterate what an utterly fantastic, emotion stirring, make you feel alive car it was. That i enjoyed owning fully, loved driving and made me turn around to admire its ass for another split-second every single damned time. Reliable too. Never failed to start or broke down on me - and modifying costs aside i had just the 'normal' blown flexi / manifold issue; and one front suspension joint fail in 3.5 years of ownership. Fantastic cars.....

So.......after a little soul-searching, a bit of pondering and a lot of researching; i kinda decided i fancied the whole Cayman thing. Supposedly great fun, handle like hell, brilliant build quality and a few specialists have told me they think they have hit rock-bottom price-wise and may now go up in value. As a summer toy - that ticks all the boxes. Through a friend i then managed to blag an afternoon on my own with a 3.4S manual gearbox version this Sunday past. It's just a Clio on steroids really. Seriously feels like a slightly grown-up hot-hatch ! Weighs less than 100kg more than the Clio and loves being grabbed by the nuts and squeezed hard - and rewards that style of driving by making you giggle like a pre-pubescent school-girl. Sound familiar guys ?

I looked at a few, scoured the fine print of many more for sale; but today came across this low mile, mint condition, decent spec, full Porsche maintained example thats just had an £800 service and comes with 6 months comprehensive warranty. And it's close to home. Dealer says seeing that i rung so soon after it appeared for sale, was keen to leave a securing deposit and seemed so assured about what i wanted and expected, and he's so confident it's one of the very best out there of this model / age - he's actually going to write the sales ticket out tonight !

So that's me done i think. But i wish everyone here continued enjoyment of your special cars. Stay safe chaps..........

A car that absolutely floats my boat! Everything I would be looking for in a weekend/holiday fun car.
I'm not the same as you Shuv in that it's taken a while to get over the Clio, but I'm finally enjoying my S1.
I am already thinking ahead though & asked Glenda if we REALLY need a 4 seater car. (You understand that these things take time in my household). I'm thinking in maybe 3/4 years that I might ditch the E class Cabriolet & the S1 for a Cayman or a Boxster as the only car. Who needs practicality anyway? The only time I use the hatchback practicality is going to the local tip maybe once a year. Any more than that I usually go with my neighbour in his car. I'm not buying any more cars registered after 2021 anyway as I object to "Big Brother" speed limiters.

So as per my usual thing; after pouring blood, sweat and tears into it: and getting it exactly as I wanted and imagined - I then immediately felt the need to let the Porsche go too….

And despite not planning on another car…..let alone toy: somehow the memories of RenaultSport ownership kept coming back to me in waves…..

So the feelers went out for a nice, late,mint; Megane 275. Something different / I’ve not had. But I also hedged my bets and let it be known I’d happily consider a really nice 200 too. I know what these are about, I can get a set of golf clubs in the back - and they are good fun.

A few decent cars eventually appeared - one being the other side of a small pond - in Ireland ! The other being 600+ miles away in Northern Scotland…..

And then I had contact made from someone local’ish to me with an amazing sounding LY.
Just 25k on the clock, both Cup packs, full Akra Evo exhaust, Speedline wheels, mint Recaro’s, belts just done etc etc and mintier than mint inside and out.

Do you believe in fate ???

Was dry stored for 3 years. Had all new brakes/ calipers upon being put back on the road…..
