Rs 200 Turbo making 171bhp!

Hi, ive had my clio RS for 9 months now 15 plate 52k miles i decided to get it mapped about a month or 2 into owning the car was running fine, fitted an ITG maxogen cold air intake to this and the car was idling and driving perfect but the last few months its developed abit of a rough idle at cold start and also abit of a missfire it idling that moves the car but the car is still driving fine, i took the car to a new tuning company got it on a dyno and they advised the car was running 171 bhp and the map done previously was poor, they remapped and it remapped too 215 bhp and 319nm torque but the missfire at idle is still there. I have changed spark plugs and there is no fault/engine codes coming up. Does anyone know what this could be as i still thinm there is some issue with performance ive seen alot of clio rs 200's at 220/230plus on a stage 1? Mine only managed 215

They said it was the map the previous company did they asked for too much torque from the ecu at low rpm so it was dumping fuel and missfired under load also, but they made a custom tune for the car, it jumped from 171 to 215 told me the car was running fine no more missfire underload, went home and one of the spark plugs had blown past the seal so i replaced them with the plugs from Renault but the car is still missfiring at idle the car isnt showing any warning lights or faults when plugged in for diagnostics?

There was build up on the spark plug where there shouldnt of been any build up at the top of the plug, I dont have any photos of the plug as it got binned.

A faulty coil pack does not show a warning light and you get flash over as the spark goes down the outside of the plug also check the for water/oil in the spark plug holes a leaking windscreen washer pipe can drop water onto the head then it evaporates off so not always spotted. Now your car is mapped for a faulty ignition system. I fixed a Clio 197 sport for a car dealer local to me as he knew I had an unhealthy knowledge of one type of car there was no misfire codes or warning lights but it had two faulty coil packs which I did not expect double failure the plugs pointed to which cylinders that were effected.

Plugs from my 172:
Black marks down the body of the plug (circled)
Heavy corrosion at the base in the areas arrowed.
Heavy staining on the ceramic above the base.

Cheers for that that plug has similar wear to the one that i found in my clio, when you say mapped with a faulty ignition will the missfire on idle keep occuring?

Your situation does not make sense if it was mapped and ran fine why would you allow someone to remap it????, the map is not the problem. Then after mapping it still has the same problems and you said they knew there was unburnt fuel. As for dyno horsepower the figure does not mean anything as long as it gets better and no real dyno people will map a car that is not running right the dyno should have only been used to check for horsepower loss and a misfire does not need a dyno as the problem is right in front of you. As for mapping with an engine problem your wasting your time the problem with mapping by someone who is not familiar with that engine is each cylinder runs different the inner pair may run richer than the outer ones the lambda measures all 4 together when we mapped superbikes we had modified down pipes with a lambda on each cylinder to find the bikes fueling profiles because of the common fuel rail the pressure and flow profile cant be the exactly the same on all cylinders then offset each cylinder for a tighter lambda reading. And your new map is compensating for 1 or more cylinders not running right at the moment.

who was it who did the remapping in both instances?
if you're having a stab at fixing this yourself, it's potentially going to costs you a bit in replacing parts which aren't necessarily needed.

if you're sure it's ignition related, then the next thing after plugs would be coils really. Though it's important to bare in mind, that 215 isn't exactly far off the other 200's you've seen.

A company called carlton tuning did the first map it wasnt dyno'd they just did a flash map onto the car the only reason i decided to get the car re mapped again because i fitted the itg kit and the reviews of the company i went too the first time went down the drain and alot of people started to get issues, the map with them cost me £150 which i should of known, i took it too a place called chip tech tuning who had a dyno and alot of good reviews, that cost me 350 they spent 7 hours on the car where the first company took 1 hour revv'd the car and told me im all done. Thats the only issue i dont want to start throwing money in changing parts for the issue too keep coming back, i was just hoping it was a common problem and there was a simple fix but doesnt sound like it

Plus with the power they just advised me a chiptech that the rs 200 T usually was always running under the claimed 197 hp but 26hp under stock surely that cant be right the car is only 4 years old

The issue with the original map running under stock power is the words 'Carlton Tuning' I've seen endless people having the same issues with them (on various cars) and tbh I can't believe they're still doing what they are and people are buying in to their generic £150 flash remaps (no offense)

I'd suggest taking the car to a specialist and getting them to have a look at the problem - If you think it's an issue with the remap then I'd take the car to Paul at RsTuning in Leeds as they seem the closest reputable company (based on you visiting Carlton Tuning and Chip Tech) Paul has done hundreds of these cars now and as an example a 200T with an ITG made 207.9 stock and then 237.6 bhp after a remap. However I assume it would be the price of a remap and possibly diagnostics which won't be cheap.

If you think it might just be a general issue with the car causing the misfire then there are numerous specialists in the area (again, I am assuming Carlton Tuning and Chip Tech are somewhat local to you) I personally use DDC in Doncaster but there is also plenty of others that come highly recommended RickyPRPM, Mick @ Diamond Motors etc

+1 for DDC in Doncaster. I think a specialist would be worth giving it the once over..
I’m surprise Chip Tech tuning would just map it knowing there’s an issue with the engine

Cheers for that I think I might take it too RS tuning in the future as i didnt realise at the time they offer the remap and a gearbox tune for cheaper if you get them together for these aswell, there was nothing wrong with the engine when taken to chiptech as i said before the car threw no engine codes or warning and they just thought it was something to do with the bad map carlton did as when they made there tune the car jumped from 171 to 215 and the car seemed fine and not understress they gave the thumbs up the car is running fine ive attached the graph if you see the first run around 4k it was losing power but with chiptech the power is smoother it cant be a major engine issue as the car would of still dropped in rpm? This was before i replaced the faulty plug too

Am I missing something - why couldn't the company doing the mapping tell you what was wrong with it?

Just read reviews on Google and got the answers to my question... looks like they used generic maps, then charge an extra £50 if you want a dyno run and printout of the end result.
@ND98 Get yourself to rs tuning in Leeds before that map melts your engine.
