Rediculous Labour Quotes?

Just been quoted by ktec £865 labour to fit a Quaife diff to my car ( + £600 diff = £1450 fully fitted ).

For a job which effectively involves removing the driveshafts, unbolting the gearbox and then removing the bell housing ( several bolts ) to gain access to the diff housing to change it. Could probaly do it in a day at work.

Anyone else had funny experiences with silly quotes for jobs before???? My all time favourite was £250 for a set of front pads to be fitted to my old 1.4 Clio ( 20 minute job! )...

hmmmmmmmmm thats silly the guy who is doing mine is charging me day rate so prob 200 quid

I've had a quote for my previous 197 to replace the rocker cover gasket which I later realised they use Nissan silicone for £799.51

I think cambelts are most overpriced though. Most can be done from start to finish in a morning and £400 for the pleasure is a piss take!

lmao i know u can get the kits from ebay that come with the tensioners for £90 quid lol

That is extortionate. However it is not necessarily something to have a crack at yourself unless you know what you are doing.

Have you tried phoning local transmission specialists? I was quoted £150 to fit an LSD to my Puma 'box, that didn't include removing and refitting the 'box though, but did include around £80 of crown wheel bolts, bearings, gaskets, etc.

problem with renault is u have to take the whole thing out to get at it.

Its a good shout, i'd be happy to remove the box myself and then send it to them for fitment no problems.

I'll look into it mate.

Me and my dad changed the cam belt on my old 1.2 8v clio and it was very easy. Only thing is that aparently it's more difficult on a 16v engine? Not sure about this though, because I'm not a mechanic! Lol!

just the re tensioning thats the hard part? as it has to be perfect. if u get cams u get a new belt neways so im good up to about 100k lol . . . . . if it lasts that long

Yeah its a little harder because you have to remove the engine mount and need a few specialist tools to hold the cams still.

yeah i wudnt even try that lol. brakes, suspension, oil changes are about my mechanical skill range oh and drive shafts lol other than that i leave it to ollie and rick at charlestown lol

its not just a case of slapping one in !

you have to make sure its set up right with the correct back-lash/pre-load or it will whine like a straight cut gearbox....

like a lot of gearboxes it will probably need a partial rebuild to get the settings then stripped down again to alter it etc

The best labour i can get is brilliant if i have any problems with my car (haven't had any yet though!) £0, just give my mate 200 cigarettes and hes happy! lol.

Yes it would, its definetly not just a matter of "a couple of bolts and away you go"
its a days work just to remove and refit a box in a 197...and then you gotta strip the box and all bearings seals pins etc should be replaced whenever a box is opened

as for the timing belt kits on ebay etc all il say is if the renault belt is made by 'Gates' then buy the spurious 'gates' made kit the cheap kits are cheap for a reason usually the idler or tensioner pulleys start to whine a lot sooner than a proper one and waterpumps leak or the bearings go faster in them aswell, you get what you pay for

As others have said its not just a case of remove a few bolts and slap the diff in. Even removing the box on a Clio is a long job let alone the set up.

But yes I would agress that belts are overpriced if you get them done by Renault. I was being quoted £700 for the belts on the 182, Fred @ BTM did them for £425 in the end and did the cams for an extra £50 at the same time

TBH I'd be taking the car to Fred to get the Diff done.
