poor throttle responce (ish)

Hi guys, me again :-D

Basically I have been battling with poor throttle response since I got the car.

When I first bought it everything was alright, after about a month or so it then developed the flat spot, which no matter what I do I can not get rid of!

Shortly after the flat spot developed it then started to loose throttle response at low revs, basically what happens is the pick up from idle is rubbish, I mean nearly stalling rubbish when I'm trying to pull away I have to get the revs at almost 1000-1200 just to get the thing to pull away without stalling.

So as you can tell its not good around town! Once the car is moving its pokey and quite nice, the higher revs are lighting quick through the whole rev range as well.

I have done the following work to see if it corrects it and it will for about a week and then it goes back to being crap again.

Piper cross panel filter (first thing fitted after I did a service)
Polished and cleaned the throttle body
Took the manifold off and cleaned out all the oil and crap sitting on the walls
Run fuel addative through the system (redex and STP)
When I did the service I changed the spark plugs from the very dead NGK to boshe plus 4 irridium's
Ran radiator flush through the system and then drained and refilled it.

All of the above made a difference to that low down throttle response but then after roughly a week it would go straight back to being the same as it was, I'm getting a bit lost here trying to do something to get back the performance otherwise the Clio will have to go, and none of us want that!

Just to add a little note I have noticed the engine from outside the car sounds like its blowing a bit, I haven't looked into it to much yet because I'm not sure if it has always done it or not

I was thinking about changing back to NGK spark plugs as they were in the car when I first got it and it ran loverly then!
Or maybe changing the ignition coil packs? Although I'm trying not to spend loads of money if its nessasery then it will be done

Any help would be brilliant thanks guys

can you check the first lambda voltage switching???

if its sluggish could be a duff lambda

I have managed to get the car to run a bit smoother and less erratic by spraying air intake cleaner in through the air box while the engine was idling, I did notice some black sludge on the bottom of the throttle body and a thin coating of oil on the walls of the manifold when I last cleaned it, are these cars supposed to pull oil into the manifold while running? Also does anyone think some of my running problems might be caused by my pipercross panel filter? I did notice when I installed it I didn't gain any real performance gains and lost MPG so I might change back to a standard one to see of this makes anything better

Sounds like it's the ECU ruining the mix, or possibly not burning properly (more likely the former). If you have the old spark plugs kicking around you could throw them in briefly just to eliminate it, but like Mr.Foxspeed has said, it's more likely a sensor that's tricking the ECU. If it were me, I'd drop it in to someone with the right diagnostic tools, where are you based?

Ashford, there is a Renault garage down here, and I have seen them selling Renault sport Clio's weather or not there any good I don't personally know, I might order some NGK spark plugs and put the normal panel filter back in to see if that corrects anything, otherwise I might have to book in somewhere for a remap or something along them lines

blow-bye gases are always circulated back in to the engine as its part of the pcv system and emission standards....your engine could be breathing heavy ie piston ring wear (would need compression tests to confirm) and this could cause poor running as the ecu will try to compensate for a low cylinder....

Might be a stupid suggestion, but turn the air con off. Mine's like a different car with it on/off.

Don't bother with taking it to Renault in Ashford! Waste of time completely! Go and see Ben at Master tech - he has Clip software and has just recently sorted my car after I had issues with running lean and low boost pressure. He is located on Ellingham industrial estate.

I did notice that there is always a loverly blue 197/200 hovering around where Renault in Ashford is, is that anyone on here? By the way I have managed to clean up a hell of a lot of the problems just by running some intake cleaner through it and putting the standard panel filter back on, I think she needs a remap to take a panel filter properly

1,000 - 1,200 revs to pull off sounds about normal to me. They aren't exactly the most 'torquey' engines!
