Opinions on DIY/Garage servicing for the sake of service book?

So the car is bitching at me to service it.

I'm more than capable of changing the oils etc and have done it before. But would it be worth paying a garage to do it for the sake of getting a stamp in the service book?

Planning on keeping the car for another few years so not really expecting to sell it for much anyway, hence leaning towards doing it myself.

All depends how much you think it will be worth in the future. If it's a 197 then chances are it won't be a massive issue (no offence!) - just documented with receipts will show it's been cared for and maintained at the right intervals.
Have to think of the difference in price against one with FSH and without - the money saved will likely offset the loss in the price to sell if you service it yourself.

Agree with Micah. I'm not too bothered about having stamps in the service book, just make a note of mileages and write it in the service book yourself so it's there.

Tbh unless a car is pretty unique or new (under warranty etc.) FSH doesn't mean a lot, in my experience specialists are good, dealers are a bit mehhh, and if you do it yourself just keep a history of reciepts etc.

I get a proper service done once a year and interim oil changes and that myself...

I do all my own work myself. I only buy OEM parts and keep all receipts. I personally would buy a car with loads of DIY receipts using genuine parts than a car with a vague dealer service history. Basic servicing is easy enough to do yourself. Coming from a biker background this is the norm.

same here..or you can ask your mechanic to stamp it for you once you have done the work yourself...

Do what any back street boy will do. Get a rubber stamp ordered that says "The Garage", "Hightown Service Centre" or "Billy's Brakes" or even "Renault Service Croydon", whatever and fill your own service record in.
If you do it properly, to the service schedule requirements then "Barney626 Service" is as good as the minimum wage 18 year old at the main dealer.
If you are looking at a £200k classic then the right stamps from the right specialists matter and would be checked. A £3k 10 year old one does not.

I would be happier with seeing a stamp in the book and an invoice from a specialist personally and not a main dealer.

In my personal opinion the self service thing as a buyer you are taking a massive leap of faith that the works actually been done and its actually been done correctly, but that's my personal opinion.

I've not serviced mine in almost 4 years , never broke down , starts first time every time [emoji16]
I only do 2000 miles a year in it tho.
I do just maintain the brakes and tyres tho that's a most lol.

Out of interest can I ask why for the sake of oil and an oil filter it hasn’t been done in 4 years? The cost of an oil and oil filter change isn’t that much in the scheme of things compared to other parts for these cars lol.

Sorry forgot to mention I do the oil and filter lol
The car still runs like it did when it was new.
My 182 was the same when I had that.
I've never had a problem with the Clio sports

I have always used specialists on my 182 trophy when I had that as it was then a unique car and now....it’s gone silly! Should of kept it

Anyway now I have a 197 as a track toy / road legal I do it all myself as it cost £3k and when / if I ever sell it, it will be worth £1500/2000 so stamps don’t matter as long as the receipts are there.

I don’t bother getting anyone to do the servicing on the raider do it all myself at least then I know it’s right and I know what I have put in the car, just recently done the Cambelt, dephaser, water pump and aux belt myself, with proof of genuine parts and lots of pictures doing it, things like that appeal to me more when buying a car, means someone has took the time to learn how to maintain and look after it, just write everything in the service book and keep a folder with all receipts for parts in, with Milages written on them

tbh FSH means nothing to me when buying a car, IMO a car is only as good as it’s last service, half the time it means the previous owner has paid over the odds for a sub standard job (Renault specialist work excluded), who’s to say the monkey at the garage has ever done it properly,

I don’t think it makes a big difference at all but there are some out there will not buy, even a 10 yr old car, without one! Tbh it doesn’t bother me but at least a stamp, esp a main dealer one, ensures it’s been done! Might have been shittly done buy some spotty faced oik, but that’s not the point!

Mine still has a fsh (although Indy for the past 5 yrs, see above comment why) and I’ll keep it that way tbh just for the sake of it, at the end of the day, you can generally tell a car that has been looked after from a car that hasn’t and they will always get top book and more over the others.
