Can I ask how often people top up, and is the dash message reliable when it says that oil level is correct? I haven't actually got round to buying anything yet - I assume it's 5/40 fully synthetic?

shell helix ultra for me...i dont top up mate..but you had better check your level once or twice a month,,thats what i do...

the dash method is not 100% but pretty much close (right now i got 80% oil and it show like i got 100% in the dash indicator...)

I always stick with the manufactures recommended oil, in this case ELF SXR 5w-40. I also always use genuine manufacture filters. Don't see the point in paying for expensive 'race' oils unless your running a highly tuned engine or the car is seeing a lot of track action. The standard stuff is more than up to the job providing you change it every 12 months or more often if you do a lot of miles.

Regarding top ups, I've only had the car 6-7 months and I did an oil service in January. I check mine say once a month on the dipstick, but it's not even moved so I know it's not burning/loosing any oil. Each car will be different though.

I assume nothing, i check mine on a regular basis despite what the dash says. Yeah 5/40 Fully Synth.

Elf OEM stuff in mine. I have a 1L bottle of Millers in the boot for any top-ups needed, but always Elf at oil change time.

I check my level regularly - 2-3 times a month. The dash display is a fairly good indicator and seems accurate enough from experience, but I will always do a proper dipstick check.

Changed my oil to Fuchs Titan race pro oil and noticed an instant improvement to performance from whatever was in there when I bought the car. Car felt noticibly more urgent and just drives way better.

The 200t is running standard oil but I had Fuchs Titan pro race s in the 197 and that was good stuff, really felt smooth.

Millers Nanodrive 5w-40.

Never had to top up my car since I've had it. (2 and a half years). Checked Weekly and oil replaced every 6k miles.

Mine when driven harsh needed topping up every 1-2 weeks but I know that to be quite common with people I've spoke to. My golf has only needed topping up once in the last 6 months. It's driving the same miles on the same roads in the same way. Engines which spend a lot of time revving high tend to use more oil, generally.

I've read how an engine was run in from new can effect how much oil it consumes, how true that is I don't know! Mileage can also have an impact, generally the higher milers you would expect to use more oil due to wear but again this isn't always true.

My Clio hasn't needed a top up since I did the oil service back in January, I've done about 2000 or so miles since then and I don't hang about!- It gets driven as intended lol.

I don't have a clue what the last person that owned my car put in there but since I serviced it with Fuchs Titan ProRace S its been so much smoother and warms up nice a quick too! Done about 2000 miles since the service and its practically at the same level
