I then brought some red hammerite paint from halfords and done one side but alot of people said i was mad as it was known to set alight so i ended up sanding it all off

On fire, really. Never heard that one before. I've been using Hammerite to paint brakes for about 14 years now and I've never, ever, had an issue. My mate's have been using it too and again no issues. I've used it on brakes that have been used very very hard on track (if anybody know Kirkistown they know how hard it is on brakes) and again no issues. Yes there will be a slight smell at the start but that soon goes away.
