My £150 trackday project

I have just took delivery of a 1993 (L) Pug 106 xsi 1.6 8v, with 70k on the clock in white. Its a runner but burns out the ignition fuse almost immediately and has been stood for 2 years. Its a time capsule inside and bodywork all be it mouldy is immaculate.
Its approx 880kg car and 105ps engine, with a good 80-100kg removed and a bit of brake and suspension work and a good tune, exhaust and filter to bring it close to its power I reckon im in for some fun days. Best bit about it...it was £150!! Pics to follow as its dark now but I aim for 3 months turn around and a budget of £1000 which is how much a good one costs to buy. Any tips or tuning parts welcomed!

sound good i did the same as you 2 years ago baught a 106 ralley shell and put a vts engine i it was going well till i went into the back of a new car at the lights was guted but lukerly it was my track car so still had the 182 but lost all my money and my no claims, and all that work and money was for nothing as the car never even made it to a track lol

good mod for them is a pug sport zorst they sound imence next on your list should be a 4 branch manifold, another bid mod is a 266mm break conversion from a Renault twingo van or the gti6 fit straight on and stop you on a penny, if you need any bits let me know alot of my m8s have 106 gtis vts rallyes etc and will have tons of bits lying round

The 16v engine is always on the cards, I think, and its just a 'think' at the moment but my mechanic who is evo/scooby specialist may be sponsoring it to get his business name out there a bit more, and hes up for dropping a colt czt engine in it!! lol, shame bout your rallye, u kept any bits??

Ace! I've got one of these, powered by a cammed gti engine.

Great thing about these cars is they're pretty cheap to make fast! Although I've probs spent over £4k on mine now :s it gets addictive wanting it to go faster and faster!

What you gonna spend the grand on?

Personally I'd do the following:

You can pick up a gti engine for £200, don't bother modding the 1.6 8v the 16v engine is rapid in these cars. Use your xsi box if it's decent.

Vts rear beam £100-£150,
Coilovers £300
Sticky tyres £300ish
206gti brakes £60

And you'l smash any 197 or 200 round a track lol ...that may bring up some comments!

Got some vids of mine on my youtube channel, including this year's French Car Show track time which is a pretty good watch:

That looks rapid! not happy it passes a 207 gti with ease tho lol cos thats my other car, however its running 215bhp! im shocked at how cheap the gti engines are, we could get a donor 306 s-16 engine for free its whether the 2.0 lump would fit? we have 4 toyo proxes already, and new discs and pads, didnt consider caliper upgrade but wanted rear beam/disc conversion, you could be the oracle i need

My mate has a S1 106 Rallye and it is far and away the funniest thing I've ever lapped in. He's running standard power/box, so with more oompf it'd be insane!

I approve of bonkers French clutter.

na sold it to a guy that works at it a local repair garage who sprayed it blue . it was white not many of the white ones left what a tit it didnt last long after that he drove it like he stole it was guted as he works in the next unit up from mine so saw it being driven hard from cold every day, the engine was a very low one aswel with full service history even gave me the log book ecu wiring loom mounts the lot lol as he was puting a bike engine in the back,as he had a bike accident and was in a wheel chair for months and wanted a project wille he recoverd, was a good storry aswell lol loved that litle thing was so quik lol only had one seat and a dash

2 seats and a dash will do me, we plan to use laminate rear windows, dispose of rear wiper motor, central locking, electric windows all carpets and sound deadening, possibly remove power steering, the aim is to get it to around 750kg's.Its a learning curve but a grand is the budget and im sticking rigid. Its a shame thought because it'd be a perfect restoration project with that mileage and 2 owners.Oh well!

lol they were built to be ruind m8, my m8 has a 205 yellow rallye not many made and he has a 106 gti engine cammed and on throtle bodies full cage buckets etc it was featured in pfc mag its insane hes spent close to 10k on it lol will try and find a pik now for you

White on white looks sweet! I'm having a roll cage built in mine soon and getting the whole car sprayed white. It'l be like a mini version of my 197cup!

1st mod, remove alloy fuel cap...

Think my bro might have a gti engine going actually so let me know if you want one.

i want one!!! will it have box, ecu and loom etc? everything welcome inc shafts etc

Fantastic project car.

My mate used to have a heavily tuned 106 GTI with cams and lightweight flywheel. Used to walk all over the 197!

Thats a brilliant project mate, all the best with it! Keep us all posted with plenty of pics!

ive just given it a good wash and machined it with compound, blaseted out all the crap from the joints etc and its come up stunning. The only bodywork needed is a new plastic trim on one wheel arch and the bumper on the rear re hanging!!! ill post yet again a crap nite time pic, but im torn now on restoration project and make money/keep it or full on track car. Its gotta be worth a grand with a years ticket and tax? aaaarrrghhhh!
