MTEC Disc Coating

was fancying these coated mtec discs ... after reading this, not anymore.

The discs are honestly great, much better stopping power than stock, it's just the silver coating, on the rears only that don't seem to be.

No one has reported any issues with black coating, and silver on the front discs also seems fine.

If anything my recommendation would be either go for black coating, or don't pay for it at all and do it yourself with some paint

Dont want to put people off MTEC discs as they're actually very good, and very well priced. Just be wary of silver coating on rear discs.

okay ... it's just that i don't like the way they are handling the issues you and academic are having.

Paint arrived from MTEC -

"Deco Blik" it's called - rattle can

Looks like it's part of their "RAL" range, rather than their "High Temperature Resistant" range but we'll give it a go and see what happens... probably going to be a job for the weekend now or possibly Friday afternoon depending on the weather

This is what MTEC sent you? I got a very small paint tin with the lid tapped down with masking tape. Dont think its even full!

Yeah MTEC sent it via Parcel Force - I was expecting to get the same as you did, was surprised when I could hear the rattle can ball bearing before opening the box.

Well, I've successfully dodged the rain! And I've had what I'd like to call a very productive Saturday morning!

After pissing about with a couple of jacks I finally got both rear wheels off the floor and was happy the car wasn't going to fall over. Dunno what it is about the Clio, but they seem to be such a faff to jack up - maybe due to such a rigid chassis?

Anyway - firstly, wheels off, cleaned all of the disk with some of that abrasive wool cleaning pad type things and after a good rub down a liberal coating of brake disc cleaner -

Then got the Hippo tape out (effectively masking tape) and the newspaper and set to work - originally I intended to paint the caliper as well.... but after seeing how silver the paint was I changed my mind -

The paint was actually very good, and I'm certainly no painter, this is pretty much my first attempt at this sort of thing - went on nice and smoothly, no runs -

and voila! Don't worry about the jagged edges where it meets the disc and once I've used the breaks a few times the pads will whip the paint right off and round it off

Hopefully it lasts longer than how they came from the factory! If I'm honest, I dont really hold much hope... but as long as the paint stays on and doesn't wash off when it rains or I wash the car, I guess I'm happy enough.

While the car was jacked up I've had a look over the exhaust system - I was getting an annoying little rattle sometimes on gear shifts and was convinced the exhaust was making contact with the heat shield. Gave everything a good prod and the exhaust was fine and was loads of clearance. I gave the heat shield itself a little wobble and it basically dropped off the car on one side! Whatever was holding it up, was about 90% disintegrated!

So after a good old rummage around in my Dads garage, he found me a suitable size nut (think it was 4mm), and a stack of washers - the end result - heat shield now fits nice and tightly where it's supposed to be and doesn't wobble/rattle. Originally I only had the 1 washer on there, but after tightening the nut all the way up, it was still rattling. I think the heat shield was so rusted and the washer wasn't quite big enough. So for attempt #2 I thew a bunch on

I've only just repainted both front and rear hubs with Black smoothrite. And the almost new rear discs already had a good 'orange' coat of fresh rust on.

Be interesting if the paint they sent you lasts longer than mine. Hate to say it - but i'm guessing not.

Hope i'm proved wrong though !

Old thread revival, but ordered front and rear discs from MTEC, and paid extra for black protective coating on all four.

After just two weeks being fitted I'm seeing a lot of rust on the rears.

The fronts are spotless, so my guess is that they just didn't coat the rears...

I've sent them an email anyway, I'll update here with their response.

Although this is a pain, I'm very happy with the performance of the discs, and their support team seem good; when I placed my initial order I ordered rear pads but not fronts and they sent me a courtasey email the same day to check this wasn't an error on my part (I was ordering front pads elsewhere but it was nice that they checked).

Let's hope they can help me resolve this issue...

Unfortunate you seem to have exactly the same problem I did. Good luck with MTEC though, they were rather less than helpful when I emailed them. If you can get a can of black paint out of them to re-do it yourself, you're doing well

In all fairness, the silver paint they sent me out to do mine, still seems to be holding up quite well. Based on the time stamps on my posts above, that was 10 months ago now

I've had the same issue with the black coating!

Fronts i replaced 6 months ago and are showing no signs of rust, i replaced the rears recently and after 2 weeks they were covered in rust. I kicked up a stink with mtec and they offered paint which I refused. Managed to get a replacement set of discs and they too have started to rust after just a couple of weeks... I gave up chasing them to sort it out

I had MTEC discs on my old Mini JCW and I thought they were utter crap (sorry). Interestingly I ordered some XP10 pads from Ian at Carbotech and I asked for his recommendation for a good disc.

'Anything apart from MTEC mate....'

Says it all.

They are a very popular disc on here and a lot of people have had them fitted, me included Aside from the coating issue, I don't know of any complaints from anyone about quality or longevity, but it's interesting to hear about the other side.

I have also had poor a experience with Mtech discs albeit in a quite extreme application.

220bhp, 1000kg, 255mm brakes, Carbotech XP10 pads, cracked disc first time out with the Mtechs at Blyton. Have used Brembo blanks on the same car without issue.

They're probably absolutely fine for road cars and less lairy track cars though. :grinning:
