What you say is correct. However the R26R holds its value because its value was low to begin with. It was never a £46k car or whatever this dealer is asking. The rest of the cars you've mentioned are going up because they are classics, still we are talking about £5k region, not £45k.
We shouldn't compare RenaultSports with the special ford models. Cossies are out of the question as they have appreciated massively, however they are still cheaper than £46K and that is after the appreciation having kicked in. Again, their list price (adjusted for inflation) was never even that high to begin with. And that is after 20 years...
Pay £46k and wait for 20+ years to get any - doubtful I might say - returns sounds like a bad investment to me that's why I don't think anyone buys Renault Sport cars thinking that way. At the end of the day the competition nowadays is so big that I doubt these cars are going to even be considered future specials. Trophy R was only known because it broke the ring record, that was what the marketing was all about, then Honda came by to break it after a few months so my question is, what will the Renault be remembered for? A hatchback with no rear seats, fancy dampers (which are shared with the mainstream model) and a cage keeping the ring record for a few months?
M3s, quattros, Deltas, cosworths have all racing history hence their appreciation to the eye of the true petrolhead. The megane trophy is just a stripped out megane. It will never play in the same category as the aforementioned bad boys..
