KWv3 Worth the Cash

KW's are the best compromise between track and street. There are better suspensions for the circuit out there, but it would be undrivable on the road.

Lowering the car doesn't mean that is going to go through corners faster, as the suspension geometry gets changed and is no mre in the range of appropiate arms angle, etc. It's kind of hard to explain as my english is not bad, but not good enough to get into those things. Any suspension specialist can explain that better. The clio seems to work very good up to 30 mm of lowering, after that it starts to get dodgy steering, weird reactions...

Also, if you want to get 100% out of the KW V3's you have to know your stuff, as this suspension is 2-way adjustable, it's not just 1 knob that sets up the suspension stiffer or softer. You can set it up and think that the car is moving better than before, but you are only using 75% of the suspension potential. Somebody with good knowledge can set up those suspensions and make the clio fly.

My point is, if you buy the V3, if I were you' I would go to some suspension specialists and I would have it set up, and that's more money you have to spend apart from the suspension itself.

Instead, V1's have a given setup that is good enough for 85% of the situations, and is cheaper, but maybe not worth the money having cup suspension.

Cheers

very good points from Turu. anything with any amount of adjustability is only as good as the person that sets it up. Dont foget also ride height can massively effect handling. what looks good doesnt necessarily handle well. corner weighting and suspension setup may cost another 400quid on top of your coilovers, but it makes your coilovers worth the money.

thanks for some really good advise guys, i think the s up questiois smethingI will have to ask my mechanic friend . . . he is quite gd

Great thread here and great advice, now ive decided im not selling up im guna be looking into some decent suspension. Ive got a mate who had a 182 who had coilovers and they had been professionally set up, it handled like it was on rails, nothing cud get round roundabouts faster and i didnt have a hope in hell of keepin up with him.

Goint points made by Turu and m.barnes... As said, it isn't a case of paying more for a lower/better handling car. Suspension needs to be set up properly, even more so with V3's. I went for V1's and the handling is plenty good enough imo.

Great thread, and some good points. i have been thinking of getting coil overs for my clio, i fiitted some on my mk1 golf, they take a bit of setting up. but my question is, that renault have spent a lot of time and money reserching and testing the car to get the best setup, if i wer to spend the dosh on the dogs balls of coilovers and get them fitted up, would it realy make that much diffrence? i dont go on the track with my car, but i feel that yes the car will look better, but will it ride better and drive better? than a standard setup?

harvey I think the coilover option is just really beneficial to track days if you want looks I would just go for the lowering springs 100 - 150 quid not 800 - 1200 quid

It's difficult really. Since I had the V1's fitted I definately drive faster and with more confidence. I think that's the key factor actually, imo the coilovers give you that confidence to drive that little bit harder. The turning-in feels better, cornering feels that little bit tighter and the general 'feel' of the car is improved. The ride is still good too, most passengers are quite suprised how good it is considering it's on coils.

ste how much you pay for you V1's if you dont mind me askin

I got mine second hand at a good price, I think you're looking between £700=£800 for new coils.

yeah, but what iam tring to get across, by lowering even just using springs, would i be compromising my handling any? iam a bit " if it aint broke dont fix it"

cheers woody

I don't know the physics of the suspension in its entirety harvey mate, I am under the impression that the stiffer and the less roll the better handling you get . . . . trying to irradicate the 4th wheel kicking up in the air on hard cornering really. I have th cup pack and I do really rate it, it sticks to roads like glue but I am never happy lol and as my G/F always says "more money than sense" ha ha

Just for the record, I had H&R springs before the coilovers. I found the springs helped the car corner that little bit better and improved the looks, but found the ride crashier despite retaining a decent ride. On track however, the springs were pretty good, not a patch on the V1's though.
