another little update, i got the predator manifold fitted and took the car back to chris @ EFI to get the map tweaked. The car pulled slightly more than it ever has with a 196bhp run +3bhp over the initial map! (to be gaining power with the abuse its getting can't be a bad thing) and then onto shelsley walsh for the final event of the year and i managed to pull a 37.91 which i was very happy with, the cars still got some more to give before i start shedding weight and due to a miss calculation i arrived with 1/2 a tank of fuel.

And i finally got round to sorting some of my cadwell park footage

I've finally got the car booked into get the paintwork sorted although its not till the end of November and that will probably be all that gets done to the car between now and the new year. Plans for next year are to continue with the hillclimbs and complete enough hillclimbs to upgrade my licence so when im ready i can join the midland hillclimb championship! and i wouldn't mind a day at anglesey

Don't live far from shelsley, have a lot of customers who hillclimb there.

thought id do a little update

Car has been and had the paintwork sorted (finally) and i couldn't be happier with the finish the guy that did it really did do a good job!! I've added an front end image to give you an idea as he did the bonnet, bumper and front wings. I also went for some short numberplates something I've always liked the look of but wouldn't fit whilst the holes were still in the bumper.

Along with this i purchased a CAE shifter off another member on here a few months ago and whilst off over christmas had chance to have it fitted. I used Four ashes Renault for the work and couldn't be happier with the service!! it needs a little bit of refinement when i get time im going to fit another surround and try to make an infiltration panel from carbon partly to reduce the cabin noise.

next on the list is a V6 airbus im slowly collecting the bits needed to make it as seamless as possible but think it will add to the car nicely. Due to competing the battery needs a bit of thought as i can't just fit the standard one in the boot due to it being a wet battery but at the same time im a bit sceptical about using a dry cell unit for a car that gets used daily some weeks but can then sit for a couple without being started. I'm also deciding on which filter element to use as theres quite a few on the market i believe a lot use the green cotton ones but theres also piper cross and Ktec units that can be purchased fairly cheaply.

Finally i have entered a championship this year so will be competing in the NSCC (nottingham sports car club championship) work and uni permitting!! So more sprints and hillclimbs in the pipeline and hopefully a couple of trackdays as well. I'm weighing up tyre choices for the year as i need to replace 2 of the AR-1's, tempted to try some extreme performance tyres as these are rated well by hillclimb and sprinters but im unsure how these will cope with a full trackday where the tyre sees higher temperatures for a prolonged period of time.
 
very curious how they perform. in particular since they are 'retreads'.

Yeah, I've seen good and bad reviews of them myself, up a short hill like shesley or loton they seem to be great but on somewhere like Cadwell park even as a one lap sprint I've see people with them delaminating. That's why Im thinking of buying a pair to begin with and keeping a full set of ar-1's for track

Another little update,

Not done a lot to the car so far this year, i've got everything apart from the cabling to do the battery relocation meaning i can at long last fit the v6 airbox. Also I have finally managed to get my predator manifold cut and re-welded so it now sits correctly. (see pictures for the as supplied fitment) the section before the bend was about 1 inch too long this meant that the exhaust never sealed properly as the two faces were at too much of an angle when put together and the exhaust always sat very low.

I have also done my first hillclimb of the year at harewood. it was a cold day so very little grip but the clio did well and i was happy with my time considering id never seen the hill before.

Another update on the clio beings as there hasn't been one since the start of the year.

After harewood i attended prescott for one of my favourite meetings of the year - La Vie en blue which is a french and italian car meet they put on every year. heres a picture of the car taking on pardon hairpin. due to it being a fun event i stayed on the ad08r's rather than changing onto the ar-1's or extremes so wasn't crazy fast but held my own

Not long after that was coventry motofest, i competed in the two days of this event and placed 3rd on the saturday (missing out on second by .5s) and managed 2nd on the sunday. Ive attached a video of one of my sunday runs. From the driving seat its one hell of an event to be apart of!!


Next-up was a weekend at curborough doing the single lap and double lap layouts, pretty un-eventful but the friday before someone drove into the side of the car (nightmare) luckily i had the track wheels on mining that the whee studs stick proud and saved me from most of the damage. a new wing and bit of paint and all back to normal.

the penultimate rounds of the championship were at blyton park and the videos from these can be seen below for those interested, i managed 4th on both days and ended up finishing 11th in the championship overall (within 2.5s over 8 rounds of 10th), not too bad for my first championship year.



After finishing up with racing for the year i finally got round to sorting the v6 airbox. I purchased some of the track spec ducts and a varley battery to finish the set-up. RS four ashes fitted it all for me and did a top notch job.

And to finish it off a trip up to EFI to see what difference it made. Nice to see that a year of abuse hadn't done any damage to the engine making the same power it had on the same rollers 12 month earlier. The difference with the v6 airbox is minimal but it has taken the car to the 200bhp mark.

Plans for next year are to do a bit of hillclimbing locally and a few trackdays - Booked onto bedford 2nd march with open track if anyone wants to join.
 
Additional post - My brother decided to sell his rust on wheels (mk4 escort zvh turbo) and buy a renault. we found a 172 cup which has had some serious money spent on it over time but for some reason never got mapped. the head has been ported along with the intake and its running 421 cams. He had a cat fitted so it can be used in a road going class for hillclimbing along with a few other tweaks. we took it to be mapped at the same time as mine and managed 197bhp and 172ft/lb of torque. heres a few pictures of the car and the dyno printout.

Cheers, the steering wheel was done by royal steering wheels. They did (and I assume still do) them on an exchange basis where they retrim one to your specification and send it to you, when you fit it and send your old one back you then get a deposit returned, means you can still use the car. They also did the gear stick gaiter and gearknob to match (but didnt do these as an exchange item).

I've seen a few posts recently asking about the power increases that can be seen with the V6 airbox and put a post together on another forum but thought id put it in here also. In my ownership the clio has had three mapping sessions all at EFI and all were done around the same time of year (so no major difference in intake temperatures). The first was mainly due to fitting an exhaust and as can be seen the car made decent power (would of been early 40K miles at this point). This was running a full scorpion resonated exhaust with sports cat and the ebay cheap manifold.

After the demise of the ebay manifold i changed to a predator manifold and found that there was a bit of a flat spot, at the same time i also changed to a ktec filter to try and give a bit more flow. The car went back to EFI on probably around 55k miles at this point and made power as shown below.

I then decided after a season of sprinting to change to the V6 airbox set-up as can be seen in one of the posts above. This was done at the same time as changing the intake plenum to a port matched one and the throttle body to 64mm. The car was over 60k miles at this point and has always been driven relatively hard with plenty of track work.

The engine hasn't been fettled at all to this point just regular servicing. In the future i would like to see if any further gains can be seen with the PMS manifold, some cams and headwork but thats going to have to wait until the belts are due again in a few years time if i still own the car. Hopefully this shows the improvement of the V6 airbox over the standard units (albeit small gains).
 
@Lovell How is the predator manifold holding up? Was the install easy, or did you have to modify anything?
It still seems ok, but the quality is pretty shocking and they're not a great fit. I had to get mine cut and aligned so it would mate with the exhaust properly and the supplier didn't really want to know about it. I know of a few others who had the same issues and they had the same problem, the supplier refused to do anything unless they had the item returned but that's a costly job if you don't do it yourself. Personally having seen pictures of them if I were to change it again id go for the pure motorsport one they look really well made for a little bit more money but the exhaust would need cutting as it sleeves over.

Another little update on the car, Not a lot has gone on really due to covid but i did manage to get a competition entry in for an event at shelsley Walsh. It was the final event there of the year and my first competitive event for this year whilst also being my first competitive event there in around 2 years. covid rules made it unusually quiet in the paddock as there was no mixing between competitors and spectators and the obvious social distancing and masks meant mingling between competitors wasn't as normal. However the sun was shining over the hill and the prior weekend had seen some of the fastest times in around 8 years with two of the top hillclimbers making it into the 22 second bracket.

The day started out with a low 38 second run for me and over the course of the day i managed to whittle that down to a 37.53 second run (new PB). My aims at Shelsley are a 36 second run and a sub 10 second ess sector (the hard left and hard right section) which i managed down to a 10.16 so I'm heading in the right direction.

I believe that will be all for this year trackday and competition wise. Next year may see more shelsley outings all being well
