Is it possible to change upper ball joint without removing the strut?

My offside upper ball joint has failed so obviously needs changing. I have the part and I was wondering whether or not you could change the top ball joint without removing the strut? From pictures I've seen on the 'How to' section it looks like it should be a pretty simple job as it's not pressed in.

I've spent a good 5 mins looking at that picture, ummming and ahhhing. From what I've read it's held in with a circlip. I could buy a balljoint splitter if that would be needed?

well its potentially do-able with the strut in position i would say

not done a clio but had a megane in pieces

having said that it would probably be easier to remove the parts and ball joint if the whole assembly was removed...think the
driveshaft will have to come out so you can get at the lower nut of the joint

I replaced the hub/bottom swivel assy on the wife's.

To get the nut off the top swivel, I undid the track rod end and had to use a ring spanner on it. Was a pain, but doable. Easier on the car as sideways put, as it's a tight bugger all the way to the end of the thread!
