How urgent is cambelt change?

Hi, I am buying an LY R27 with only 20,000 miles on the 10th June. The car was registered on the 18th June 2007, meaning it has reached it's cam belt change.
I was wondering how critical it is to get this done bang on time given the low mileage of the engine? Luckily I work for a garage for a saturday job on the fuel pumps so I get free labour

Wouldn't risk it to be honest especially if you don't have to pay labour which is the biggest cost of the job. The belt is a perisable item if it goes your realistically looking at a new engine.

And make sure they know what there doing, as the can shafts need locking off with a renault specific tool. Seen alot of normal garages cock the timing up

is it just normal Renault tools for all the Renault engines or is a Renaultsport tool? or if you have the Renault tool does it include the Renaultsport parts to lock the engine?

I assume its an adjustable renault tool for all renaults, but i could be wrong

it doesnt really matter about the low miles, as the belt starts to degrade and crack as it gets older. guess thats why renault have said 5 year/72000? ive spoke to a garage that said hes changed cambelts on clio sports that have done like 90000 and still not gone. i guess its just a precaution as if it goes, it could be a new engine job! as someone said earlier

oh and the 200 have moved to 6yrs/72k...and as far as i know its still the same parts

Hey.

Not sure what is everyone view on this. Had my cambelt done at 35k ish due to age recently and as they had it all stripped. I paid the extra (part only) and had a water pump done too.

Makes sense as the extra cost doing the pump when doing the belt to later if the pump goes is worth the cost.

I'm in the same boat.

56 reg with 36k...

Got oil, filter and plugs here ready to do my own service but gotta get that badboy belt and pump changed...just gotta find a recommended specialist in the west mids/warwickshire area? (help!?) who are clued up with the task at hand and the camlock tool...doesn't fill me with confidence reading on here about crappy performance post belt change.....but a necessary evil! All timing should be chain driven Ffs Grrrrrr! I hate taking my cars into any garage!

I go to Fred @ BTM. Can't speak highly enough of him and you're looking around £400 for the belt change. Give him a ring to be sure.

Freds prices £490 including water pump which he said must be done contrary to belief... With 12 months warranty.... Nice that's me sorted....

BTM good outfit then? Do any tuning etc or just services?

I've got a work colleague who has a 2004 182 on 115,000 miles with the original cambelt!!!

Despite my best warnings he refuses to pay £400+ to prevent something he assumes won't happen...

Is he clued up on cars or stupid?

I've just had mine done at 28000 miles and 5 years... I got the dealer to pay for it at rstuning though so I knew I was getting it done properly
