high millage clio 200

Hi everyone,

I am going to have a look at a 2011 Clio 200 on Sunday but the only problem is that it has 95k on the clock so was just wondering if any one else has this high mileage and what problems can occur with high miles

Any help would be great

- Check if the gearbox has ever been replaced (not an issue if it hasn't as it's obviously a strong one, but good to know)
- check if the clutch has ever been done (having an issue with mine now at 65K miles, having to replace - not sure how long they generally last)
- Check when the cambelt was last done (it should have been changed once due to milage)
- Suspension might be wanting a refresh but that all depends how it's been driven really and a good opportunity to go aftermarket

If it's in good condition, regularly serviced - on time, and looks well looked after, I don't think you can go too far wrong if the price is right

Having bought a low miles 200 - and not done my homework properly and encountered a few problems.....

I would be VERY careful of a high miler and check receipts in terms of manifold flexi's, gearbox, belt replacement, de-phaser, brake servicing, replacement of bottom ball joints and all the known Mk3 'problems' in reference of if work has been carried out / parts renewed. Not to forget a decent general service history of course as with any car.

If in doubt walk. Or you'll be chucking your wallet at it for a while at least.

A lower miles but older 197 may turn out to be a better option at the same price-point.

Good luck.

I have spoken to the dealer and they told me that it has full service history but they didnt know what has been done. I am sure I read somewhere that it was a ex rep car. As for the dephaser pulley what do I need to look/listen for?

Nothing necessarily wrong with high miles, however there are a plenty of MK3s out there to choose from, so don't be tempted to jump at the first one.

Also, a dealer's version of 'full service history' may be very different to yours.... As above, make sure there are a lot of receipts so you are able to check exactly what's been done on it. A rep might not have looked after it as well as an enthusiast might have done.

Having spent thousands on my 200, it's now on 85k and arguably in it's newest state since I bought it at 12k.

Gearbox, clutch, cambelts and both front suspension ball joints all been changed so if it hasn't had those, I'd be expecting to replace them soon.

then its not a full service history - it should all be stamped in the book....walk away

Mine was full Renault service history and car shat itself at 92k. It means nothing, specialists probably do better job than Renault.

Full service history means nothing these days, just because the owner has thrown it at Renault once a year and it's got all the stamps that doesn't mean they've looked after it as such.

Nothing wrong with high miles but agreed with others, don't just buy the first car. Test drive at least 3 different examples so you can hopefully get a feel for a good and a bad one.

At that sort of mileage I'd budget for a full belts (cam and aux), de-phaser pulley and water pump change along with a full fluid and filter service.
-Clutch should be ok if it's had an easy life, but it's hard to tell how long it will last.
-Brakes might want a good clean/service if they've been neglected. The pins on the brembos are notorious for rusting in and the rear calipers are known to seize up too.
-Check for the common ball joint/swivel joint issue, as this can be quite expensive to get sorted. Your talking a good few hundred quid a side easily. Mine went shortly after I bought the car but I suspect they were on the way out before I got it, luckily I paid for a years used car warranty so that covered the cost... might be something to consider for piece of mind?
