Gearbox Change

Hi chaps,

Will shortly need my gearbox replacing due to a nice crunch into 3rd.

I have picked up what I believe to be a revised gearbox (TL4S20) with 4k miles on it.

I'm going to replace the clutch and slave cylinder whilst I'm at it.

Is there anything else worth replacing/upgrading whilst this is being done?

Thanks,
Matt

Look at the slave cylinder as mine cost me a fortune a few weeks ago as it pissed fluid onto the clutch. Only 62000 miles as well. (£1184 bill hasn't helped my month)

If you already have the parts it's a easy job it's about 4 hours first time as there will be sized bolts if not that's a bonus don't forget gear oil slave and cluch and brake fluid

Sounds a little more than 4 hours from what I've read so far!! Good call on the fluid. Have box fluid and think I have some brake fluid laying around as well!

Def not mate I do no problem in 4 hous even if they have been not looked after if you do more than 5 hours your being ripped off your prob better doing it yourself if you are able to or go to a specialist

Pretty sure the Renault book time is around 6/7 hours for the removal and refitting so could easily be done in less

Are there any specialist tools needed for this?

Two Techs are only about 40 mins away so will give them a call and get a quote.

I have a Toyosports manifold sitting in the spare room and a set of Powerflex engine mount inserts, would this be a good time to get them fitted to save on labour costs?

Nothing more specialist than any good technician/mechanic wouldn't already have.

You need to drop the subframe to fit the manifold so I guess it would be a good time to get it all fitted at once.

Terry did mine for me. Off the top of my head, It was about £600 in all, that included dropping and replacing the gearbox, changing the clutch and swapping the exhaust mani, plus oil etc.

I always take my car there, great guys. Highly recommended.

I changed to the Redline stuff and if anything it seemed to make the changes worse! I then changed to the 'new' Renault stuff (Elf Tranself NFJ 75W80) and it seemed to get a bit better..

I've seen you post that a couple of times fella, wht do you recommend? The Redline stuff? I'm changing mine in the next month.

plenty of choice on opie oils site....one of the things I did on mine and gearbox was fine..in fact it had 2 oil changes whilst I had it

I got/used some either Castrol or Valvoline fully synthetic been awhile so not sure exactly which one (from local motor factors)
