Gear oil change

Is it straight forward drain and top upto a level plug or do I need anything else. I will use the red line oil recommended.
1st gear is a little difficult sometimes not sure if clutch is adjustable I've not looked yet. Can't harm to do the oil .

Just did mine today, assuming the gearbox for the 197 is the same as the 200. Has a drain plug with an 8mm socket on it and the fill port has a white plastic wing nut on it.

Mines getting done on Friday.

Have we had any improvement in slickness of the box getting into 1st when cold fellas?

I used MT-90, not sure what was in it before.

Definitely smoother all round. Not a huge difference but there. 2nd seems to have benefited most for me. That and 4th were my problem gears.

Honestly, cold is still pretty crap but that doesn't bother me tbh. Just give it a minute after starting and it seems to make getting gears in easier.

IMG_2122.PNG Sorry to hijack your thread,
Can I just clarify if this is the correct redline oil to use for my 197? When it was first mentioned to me it came up as automatic transmission fluid but after some research I found the above?

Bit of a thread revival. Is 75w90 definitely the correct gear oil for these boxes? I thought the standard Renault Elf oil was 75w80.

Sorry to hijack, is this an easy DIY job? I havent seen a how to but not to say there isnt. Likewise, as above, is it not worth just using fresh Elf oil?

It's really not hard - 8mm square bit for the drain plug. Always check you can remove the fill plug first.

Changing to the Elf oil is better than not changing it at all. 2L is enough. Fill until it's level with the fill hole - you can either pump it in or use pipe to make it easier.

Thanks very much, where is the drain plug and fill hole? Ill have a look on Opie Oils.

I'd buy Elf from Renault Parts Direct initially, get it done, then do it again at some point with more expensive stuff if you'd like.

Drain plug on the bottom iirc and fill hole right next to passenger driveshaft - it's white, looks like a wing nut type thing.

theres a how too on the site

Ill have a looksie.

Ive been looking around at Redline stuff, they changed from 70w80 to 75w80. First number is for cold temps, is the 70w80 better therefore for our gearboxs and the not particular warm British winters? The 70w80 is still available in places to buy, Opie only do 75w80 now.
