gear changing

when givin the car some stick i find it hard to get into 2nd gear and it makes a crunch noise anyone have this problem if so what is it

Mines done the same from new, I've learnt to just change to 2nd a bit slower. I guess it's a synchromesh problem, so I'll let the garage know when it goes in for it's first service. March '11 car...

If you've got warranty, get it sorted as it's probably first signs of gearbox problems.

Do you have an early 197?

Hi Mate,

I've got a 2006 197 and when I give it stick on dual carriage ways I find 3rd and 4th aren't as fluent and smooth changing into when high up on the revs (6-7k). I can't hear any crunching sound. It's mainly 3rd gear. I want to change the gearbox oil in it soon, so that will hopefully make the changes smoother.

However, when going through the gears stationery in neutral and lower down the rev range they are smooth as a nut. I don't bang the gears in either when giving it a bit of welly, nice and smooth, I don't want to damage the linkage or sychromesh.

If your giving it some, 2nd gear can be a problem but i think if you keep the stick pushed firm to the left and not afraid to put it in quickly it will go in, just make sure you over-emphasize it and I don't think its too bad

This has happened to me twice before when really going for it in first gear, it crunched slightly so i naturally backed off and then it slipped in fine right after

If i was on a track this might annoy me a lot but driving on the road i prefer going for it in 2nd/3rd anyway, first gear is just for pulling away

Had this issue with mine yesterday, it wasn't playing ball with rushed changed at all, good to know it isn't just because mine has done a lot of miles.

I just use 1st to pull away, up to 4k on the revs and then up to 2nd and then start the long ratios.

Mines a late 57 plate but still with the early box and when cold it often refuses to go into gear, and sometimes when warm - but a bit of gentle persuasion and it's sorted - no crunching either:thumbup:

Sounds like I best get saving for a new 'box then by the sound of it!

Same. Mine has the early box in that didn't have the 2nd gear sychromesh problem. My car is 06 though. I know what you mean though mate, most of the feedback on hear is negative but some parts good. It's good to hear what peoples experiences are so at least I can look out for them if it does happen to my box. Fingers crossed it doesn't.

I'm sure that even with the symptoms described, we don't neccesarily need new 'boxes! I'm going to get the 'box oil changed next month, to at least prolong the life of it. Let's hope our 'boxes aren't on their last legs!

they could be "weak" synchromesh hubs/baulk rings - either way they shouldnt crunch if in tiptop condition...

if anyone drains the oil need to check and filter it for swarf/metal content :001_rolleyes:

As I say - no crunching, just a refusal to engage gears sometimes - french surrender monkey:rofl:

I will be keeping my eyes peeled

Why can't renault just get a gearbox right! Touch wood I haven't had any issues so far.

It's like they are made of cheddar.
