Dodgy wipers

Hi all,

My 197 has once again developed an issue with the wipers. It's had this issue before and went away on its own, but it's now back and I'd like to fix it...

I have a video that shows some of the issue:

The wipers essentially do all of these things:
  1. When I turn the car on, despite the wipers being off in the stalk, they sweep once or twice
  2. When I use the windscreen washer jets, the wipers will keep sweeping for muuuch longer than normal
  3. When the wipers are going off when they shouldn't, they often stop in random places instead of the parked position, often somewhere in the middle
  4. When they stop in the middle, using the stalk to turn them on and off won't do anything for a little while but then it will eventually allow me to turn them on and then off to 'park' them
  5. The wipers will occasionally turn on on their own and using the stalk to turn them on and off won't do anything.
They essentially have a mind of their own.

I haven't tried anything yet, but can confirm that the scuttle is bone dry and has been since I bought the car a few years ago.

Any help to troubleshoot this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

I would check this out to be honest if you don't have a diagnostic tool to disconnect the wiper motor from the linkage arm, and you can check how the motor functions and that it stops in the same "parked" position. From there, you can try and move the linkage by hand so you can feel how free it is. There is a protection system that senses physical force like the electric windows, so if the windscreen has frozen, the wipers deactivate for a short time, you can see in the video, to avoid motor and wiper damage. But striping the linkage, sanding the pivots, then greasing them again would be as important as making sure the scuttle drains are clear.
