Discs and Pads - better option than MTEC?

Just ordered the same drilled discs and pad setup as CallerFold.l know some people have had noise issues with grooved discs,was wondering if the
same noise issues effect the drilled discs,

I haven't noticed any noise with the drilled discs at all. Only affects the grooved AFAIK which is why I opted for drilled only. There was a bit of noise coming from the rear passenger side initially but after a drive yesterday it soon stopped - I think it was probably just bedding in/the extra friction from the silver coating on the discs wearing off.
 
I have drilled and grooved discs on mine and there's only a slight noise when you have to break heavily. But it's not a bad noise, quite good really I like it!

Replaced my front discs with DBA2350S. The S stands for slotted. Paired them with DS2500 pads and all works like a dream.

My god they look good! Love the slotted discs behind the OZ's. Calipers still looking fresh too (presumably refurbed?)

Despite the F1's being fantastic tyres, I can't help but think this pic could be improved with some semi-slicks for that all out aggressive road set up :smiley:
 
I'd love some semi slicks but this is my daily drive so the F1s will do. Love these tyres, great grip wet or dry. Car 5 years old now and got through 5 sets of tyres and F1 are the only ones that last more than 12k miles. Have not done anything to the callipers other than a good clean and a bit of waxing
 
Yep, I recently had Mtec drilled discs fitted all round, told my insurance company along with other mods ITG panel filter, centre exhaust removed and powerflex upper and a Ktec dogbone (Halifax) went from £350 fully comp to £2500 due to the mods. I am 64 with a clean licence. Went to Ad Flux £510 cause I live in a S***y area, well known for cash for crash. best tell em or your screwed if you or someone else claims on you and they inspect the vehicle.
NB: Flux insisted on a front facing camera too, permantanly recording.
 
I enquired about the change in brakes to my insurance company, and they said it will be an extra £21 for the year. I need new rear discs and pads. So standard Renault ones are £211 all in, MTEC around £178 (plus coasting and minus any discount) so with the added insurance its not that much different.

However when i come round to needing front discs and pads as well (Renault £190 and MTEC £130ish) I'll be saving money again.

Discs are the same spec as far as I'm aware? Vented fronts, solid rears, what's changed?

The MTEC discs are either drilled, grooved or both so visually they look different. So I would think its best to tell your insurance company. If they were vented/solid like the Renault ones like then I wouldnt bother telling them.

Sounds like madness to me haha, might as well be telling them it's no longer on OEM tyres either (think 197's originally came with ContiSports?)

I agree totally, when I bought my car they put some budget pads on (without me knowing) Does that mean i'd have had to tell my insurance company of the change from the OEM Brembo pads ? or from Eagle F1's to ContiSports tyres ?

I think little things like brakes, tyres etc I wouldn't bother notifying (personally)

The way insurance companies are these days, if I rang them and said i'd changed my tyres they'd put it up £250 or something ridiculous and they already have my pants down with what I pay anyway!

thats how it works here mate..not sure if you have to let them know about diff discs but sure pads should be added to your policy..same with exhaust,suspension etc...

The car will be insured on the basis that it's unmodified. If you're knowingly fitting kit that isn't OE or equivalent, then you should declare it. I'd imagine many uprated brake pads are marked "not for road use" which they may well be interested in if you have an accident. Tyres are harder to quantify. For some reason it seems to be accepted by insurers that fitting nasty ditch finder is ok, as is running "summer" tyres during winter. At least most now understand the concept of winter tyres and won't charge you more so long as you're running manufacturer approved sizes.

With more commonly modified cars, good specialist brokers don't mind most things, unless you hike the power significantly. My Caterham was even more fun - "tell me what's standard, and I'll tell you what's different" :lol: But the broker just took down a list of options, engine size and power and value.
 
I'm with greenlight (broker) and when I said I'd changed my pads and discs for non oem spec they said as long as they are for road use and don't say "not for road use" on them anywhere (like the nasty little tag I took a grinder too on my decat) then it's fine no need to notify them I'd have assumed most insurance company's would be the same.
 
I just think with drilled and/or grooved discs as they differ from manufactored spec I'd personally feel better telling them. I can just see/fear an insurance company refusing to pay out as the brakes were different. The pads i wouldnt think make any difference as if the insurer sent out someone to inspect the car after an accident they arent going to take the pads out to see if it says Renault on them.
 
Yep, they told me drilled or vented discs make the car more desirable externally, hence the nicking risk factor has increased.
