Crankshaft seal how to? Clio 197 F4R

Hey,

Clio 197. F4R engine.

Im in the middle of fitting a new gearbox with a quaife installed and replacing the clutch and slave at the same time.

Whilst we were at it we noticed that the crankshaft rear seal was leaking and needs replacing too.

Question is, does the new seal just pop right on as is? After a clean of course. Ive heard people mention silicone sealant. But where would you apply it and is it necessary?

Help please.

Thanks,
Gordon

I’ve never applied sealant to a rear main oil seal and I’ve done a fair few, main thing is fit it square and make sure it’s the same height as the factory one when fitted

Great, thanks for your reply and glad to hear it. Can i just clarify however, what do you mean by the same height? As in sticking out from the block? The last photo there is of the new item in situ. Look alright you think?

iirc there is sealant on the rear cap that forms the part where the main seal fits - only needed if you remove the rear cap

Yes as in same height as the original, not too far in or too far out, generally the crank has a slight groove in it so the seal should sit in approximately the same depth in and also be very square to the blocks machined face

A picture won’t really help as long as it's square that’s the most important aspect, generally the depth is flush with the block in most I’ve ever done, hence square also...
