Cold Starts

Just recently i've noticed that my car is doing the 'cold start procedure' less and less? Like it used to always on first start up sit at 1.2-1.3k or there abouts for a minute or so, and i'd let it do that until the revs dropped before i drove off.

Now with winter basically being here, i was expecting to see it more and for it to do it for longer with the temps dropping. However, it barely does it half as much as it used to! Some days it will, and other days it will just start up and sit at or just below 1k. Not a massive issue as such, as i just wait a minute or two while sorting music etc before driving anyway, just a strange one.

Has anyone experienced this before? Anything anyone has changed to overcome it?

Not sure on how to recirfy it. But it's just the procedure for heating the cat up for emissions..... I wouldn't worry about it

Just drive off as normal. I have the cold start mapped out of my daily as it has a 0 cell race cat

Yeah mate! I just find it weird how it used to idle slightly higher on a cold start now it barely does, oh well. I've not noticed anything bad come from it as i always sit with it idling for a minute or two before driving off anyway. Cheers

Ive noticed that putting the ignition on for 20 - 30 seconds stops the cold start 'kangarooing' recently. Anyone know if the lamba's are heated?

Yes they are, it may well be that you are correct in your solution

I fitted a plastic MAP sensor holder/bracket at the same time which holds the sensor both straight, level and pushed down so this may be the cure. But its been more than a few days and hasnt reverted back (like the ziptie 'fix')

It was a chap on the 197/200 Facebook group. Hes designed them and is 3d printing them, selling them at £7 a pop. The first one I have had has fitted ok but has needed a ziptie to still keep it in place. When I fed it back he said he would make another for me which I am yet to recieve, but still very nice of him.

This solves all your cold start issues with 197:
You can buy whole kit. Engine heating element is cylinder water space. It is basically like kettle element in engine.
2hour pre-heating and coolant is 40celsius. I have this package in my 197.
Very comfortable way start your car.

Very nice to start cold morning with warm car.

A bit overkill for us in the UK Antti lol, we have -10 tops and the car works fine then, the kangarooing / cold start problems even happen when it is 0 to +5degrees, it's just the cold map that is used that causes it (some people think it is also the loose MAP sensor), some people have had theirs mapped to improve this and others have ziptie'd or PTFE tape around the sensor to stop it moving.

Engine preheater companys recommend that you use preheating when is +5celsius or less.
This preheater package also solves that kangaroiing.
When i was driving in wintertime and naturally i preheated car in the morning before drive to work.
We have electric sockets also in work, so it was nice to leave work with warm engine+interior, (zero kangarooing).
It will save petrol too..
I dont see any reason why this kit is not good also in milder climates, like in uk.
Price is approx 300-400£ , and you can install it youself. Just information how much this kind of systems will cost.
In my country when you buy new car from car dealership, most people add this preheater option included and they install it before you collect car. Another option is petrol heater (webasto) which is popular here.

It will solve kangarooing, I am not denying that (as it will heat up the block to then go into it's normal map, getting out the cold map) but the car is designed to work down to lower temps like -15degrees, so it's not a problem, when it is even colder then that, then that is where you need one.

I went over to Canada and the people were telling us they all have them as they regularly have -30>-40degrees in winter in some areas, the engine wasn't tested to work in THAT extreme.
I work at JLR and we do test extremes on certain cars, as their intended use will be massive extremes (Kuwait midday to colds of Canada and Scandinavia), but Renault will have a smaller extreme / not want to test to the massive extremes, as it's massive cost to make a car work the whole spectrum of extremes, as most people will not use it when it does get cold, as it will be a second or third car to most people, but they will still allow it to be usable in many conditions, I drove to work when it was -12degrees and it was fine once warmed slightly (so started car while I took snow / ice off car).

Im still turning the ignition on for 20/30 seconds. I suspect theres a heated lambda sensor in the precat which doesnt get a chance to work properly when the car is just started. I have had zero problems since and Id be surprised if Renault didnt test cold starting on an engine with some mileage under its belt.

Yep we do have almost every january/february -30celsius. That is just normal.
All media and car specialists tell us you have to use preheating to avoid engine wear.
They said that cold start -30c is same you drive 600miles, same wear for your engine.
Battery must be in A1 condition to provide enough power for cold start. Diesel engines are difficult to start -30c, preheating is mandatory.
