Changing inner tie rods - any tips?

Hi all.

Both my inner tie rods have play in them so I've ordered two along with two new track rod ends. I've change track rod ends previously on my 172s but never an inner tie rod. Is there much to it? Any hints or tips?

You'll need to either buy a 32mm crows foot spanner tip with a long extension, a specific tie rod removal tool ( circa £50 IIRC ) or to remove the steering rack from the car.

Just not enough room for decent leverage inside the subframe!

there are no flats on the ball outer socket so you will need a set of pipe grips - did mine in position with rack on full lock...

Buy the tool, mine cost me £62 posted, took me less than a minute to unscrew the rod.

It's a pain buying a tool for 2 minutes work, but I had to swap them twice as ECP don't supply 182 rods and gave me the wrong ones and we have 3 Clio's on the drive.

If you live near south Birmingham, you can borrow mine for a couple of beers.

Ian.
