so i find myself in the market for a replacement alternator as mine randomly died with no warning whatsoever yesterday between trips.. low battery fault on dash 20-30 secs after starting. all tests and checks with clip and my trusty fluke 117 are pointing towards a faulted alternator... (earths are fine btw). having done some googling I can see lots of threads scattered around about how these 197/200s are quite fussy with what you replace them with.. there's lots of cheap pattern ones around (which I tend to ignore anyway), showing similar specs and reference part numbers but i'm not too sure. some of these posts and threads i have browsed through are some years old now, but I was wondering, in 2025 has anyone found one that works and actually stays working?
i've seen kam racing selling one (a valeo 439596) for a whopping £312.. if i futher google valeo 439596 i can then find one on ebay (seller kms parts online) for a more palatable £208.99. i'm just not sure if I can trust the valeo one when all i'm reading is that it's got to be either bosch or renault branded bosch both of which I cannot find. my particular alternator is a bosch p/n 0 124 425 069 - renault p/n 8200660043.
so back to my earlier question, has anyone worked out what works and what doesn't? (that is currently available on the market anyway)
cheers!
