197: Advice: Have I bought a dodgy one?

Hi Guys,

Bought this on Monday;

http://www.stanpalmer.co.uk/carsearch/viewcar.php?viewcar=MF08OVJ

Paid less than advertised on that. States quite clearly in this and the ad on the trader that it has FSH.

It has one stamp in 2009 @ 9k and the only other stamp was done last week before I bought it at 20k. The schedule is 2 years or 12k (whichever comes first), should I worry that it hadn't been serviced in 3 years?

Otherwise it seems good. Steering wheel and Recaro is knackered which I talked about in another thread. Got 4 brand new tyres on. MOT until November '13 and tax until May. Only other worry is that there are green paint spots on lots of components in the engine bay. Normal or sign of a repair? Car comes with 6 month dealer warranty (non renault).

HPI check clear, no Theft or insurer loss.

Need I worry?

If it was service before you bought it, I wouldn't worry about it personally.

Green paint though?

should be serviced every year or 12000 mile whichever comes first....so it missing some servicing!!!!

best get it to a trusted dealer or specialist that can give a once over so if anything is a miss you can take it back!!!

green paint marks are normal like that from new

I have something from Renault that states 12,000 miles or 2 years for servicing. I'll photo it and post it up when I get home.

The green paint marks are quality control marks.

Cheers mate, good to hear from a fellow Norn Iron man.

Given it has only done 20k in 4 years the fact it has missed a service maybe isn't such a huge deal. Only advisory on the MOT was play in suspension arm ball joint.

Only other query is why such little mileage? My worry was it was a weekend track toy but can't find any evidence of that other than a badly worn steering wheel.

I wouldn't have even entertained buying that, at or near the price in the ad (I know you paid less)

I would have wanted the following done before buying:

Steering wheel repaired
Recaro repaired (properley, not just coloured in with marker pen)
Service History verifying
Suspension arm balljoint replaced (this can be very expensive if it needs a new bottom arm)

Even then, I would want some money off the price personally.

Cheers for the advice. Is the balljoint something I could claim under their warranty?

Going to query the service history with them at the very least. Reacaro isn't as bad as it looks but not ideal I agree.

thats for a 200, the 197 was 12,000 or 1 year, not really that it makes a difference, but to renault it might, has its an excuse not contribute to a new engine if it did ever go bang etc

I doubt it, most aftermarket warranty companies will see that as wear and tear (which it is really) also it was a known defect before the warranty commenced. Really I would say the dealer was responsible to get that sorted before punting it on!

Rough idea on price to replace?

Now you mention it, it may have been the 200 brochure it was in. Its a 200 I have so I thought it applied to the 197 as well.

Does anyone know where I can find in writing the service schedule for a 197 is 1 year/12k?

People I bought the car off are insisting it is 2 years and that by having two services in four years that FSH is accurate.

only renault can tell you, but im 100% sure the 2 years thing is for the 200, on the 197 it was every year or 12,000 miles, maybe renault included it onto 197 when they changed it for the 200? pop into renault and ask.

as i said the 197 IS 12months or 12000mile whichever comes up first!!!

so to put it bluntly the "full service history" is missing at least 2 services!!!

if the car is 2 yrs old it should have 2 services

3yrs and had 3 services

4yrs old and had 4 services....

it even comes up on the dash to tell you it needs a service even if it hasnt done the miles it will default to time :001_rolleyes:

servcing data used to be on the renault ul website in pdf format...

Thanks bud, I saw your post over on RS.

I just need this documented somewhere semi-official so I can throw it back at the dealer, without posting off my service book.

(The dealer is 5 hours away).
