4th gear crunch

Update on my issue.

After the oil drain with no swarf yesterday had a call from the dealer to say that they have test driven it and that 4th gear synco was gone.

They rang ruk and let them know the situation straight away.

Got a call from ruk this afternoon offering me 80% contribution towards a new box, which in my view is excellent seeing as i'm nearly a year out of warranty.

Well done Renault excellent service.

Nice one mate, I was told if I had bought mine from a Renault dealer that's what I would have got. I couldn't fault them and it does make me feel more likely to purchase a future car from them

its an admission of knowing there is fault with the gearboxes...without exactly admitting to it :zap:

Does inspire confidence mate, totally exceeded my expectations.

If they're admitting a fault then someone with some spuds would be perfectly just in pursuing them for 100% as it's clearly a manufacturing fault. Under UK consumer law a manufacturing fault must be corrected, even if it's out of warranty.

There's an infamous case of a bloke winning a case against Land Rover when his 9yr old Defender blew its engine. It was traceable to a manufacturing fault on a specific run of engines so they had to replace it.

Really?! £2k seems massively too much to take a box out and replace just one synchro.

That's to replace all syncros as you wouldn't just change the one unless it was a competition box. Parts alone from Renault were in the region on 1200 + 5 hrs labour and vat soon adds up.

I wanted to put a tran x gearbox in my mk1 escort this summer but that's gone out the window now

Might be worth having a chat with Agency Transmissions in Gloucester - they refurb the 1*2 boxes for about 250-300 quid.

Which is considerably cheaper than a new box from Renault!!

just had a 182 box done by these and they sent it back selecting second even when in neutral, said it had bent a selector shaft while being returned in transit, don't think so.

To be fair, the only issue ive ever had was that on one the selector arm was put back the wrong way round - nothing a 13mm spanner couldn't fix though...

Id still happily use them, great service 99.9% of the time, normally get the box back within a couple of days if u sort the couriers out!!

I'm going to use this thread as a general 4th gear crunch thread if no one minds!

Took mine into Stockport today for the Chief Mechanic to drive - it's something they do FOC rather than booking it in and incurring a charge. This is all having spoken to RUK yesterday first.

Anyway, within 5mins he changed gear and then laughed when it crunched - said "yep, that's not right at all". Here's the interesting bit though, he said that Stockport's policy was to strip the 'box and replace whatever's goosed and rebuild. Wheras when he was at Macclesfield he said their policy was to just replace. He reckoned it's cheaper and just as good to rebuild the existing 'box than replace.

So mine's booked in in 2 weeks time to be done. It'll be about 4 days they reckon, so we'll see what comes. Just awaiting a call from RUK now about it.

I suppose the new gearbox they'd fit would have the same weaknesses. I reckon I'm gonna try and find a second hand box and have the internals made "properly" for when my replacement box eventually fails.

Copy/paste from gearbox thread (apologies!):

Had my car into the main dealer on Monday to get their recommendaction of a £2k new gearbox (4th gear crunch) only to discover a) The RAC warranty that a different main dealer gave me doesn't cover main dealer labour charges and b) the warranty company wants someone to diagnose the specific problem to see if it's repairable.

Off to an indy gearbox specialist I go and they've discovered that the 4th gear synchro is shot and 4th gear is worn down - a warranty assessor is going to look at the gearbox tomorrow or Monday but the garage suspects they'll call it 'wear and tear' and not cover it...on a 4 year old 37k car!

Had an open line of communication with Renault complaints department the whole time (both regarding **** dealer provided warranty and chocolate gearbox) and they've said that if the warranty company mug me off that they'll review it...fingers crossed as I don't fancy £570+vat for the repair the garage has quoted!

Can anyone who has had positive outcomes PM me with their vague details of their issue and what contribution they got towards repair? A reg would be handy as if there's a precedent with other cars it would be good to be armed with the particulars!

Mines gone in again today, as i'm getting 40% warranty and 40% ruk contribution the warranty dept want the dealer to have another check so they decide as to give me either a:-

New box

Exchange box

Or a strip and rebuild

My dealer has already told me they don't repair so i'm guessing an exchange box
