roblee8g Clio X85 Cup

It was the last track day (of 2019) for me yesterday. The weather got a bit warm during the day which seemed to hurt lap times a bit, but a good day nevertheless. In the practice session used to set grid spots, I set the fastest time, and this video shows the chase of a supercharged Toyota 86 and a turboed MX-5.

Although motor racing is extremely curtailed at the moment, the local South Australian track "The Bend" is holding track days almost every day (albeit with 10 entries maximum allowed). Last Friday I went there for a day on the GT Circuit (7.77km). This is purported to be the 2nd longest permanent motor racing track in the world (behind the Nurburgring). I did 3 runs of 25 minutes each, the first 2 on Dunlop Direzza ZIIIs, and the 3rd on Toyo R888Rs. The best lap on the Toyos was 5secs. faster than the best on the Dunlops. The Race Technologies analysis software confirmed the difference was based on improved grip. It was my first time with the DL1 data logger, so I have lots to learn about analysing the data. Here's a video showing 1 lap on the Dunlops. I will post another video later showing a lap using the Toyos.

I've had these white ATS wheels for a year or so, using Toyo R888R. I also bought the last set (Black) from APMotorsport recently. I think that I'll re-powder coat them white before fitting tyres. The original Speedlines are used for trailering, and wet days using Dunlop ZIIIs.

Shift lights are working OK. It's just the camera angle that causes them not to be visible on the video. Most shifts coincide with the 1st red light.

The car has been in hibernation for a while, whilst I finish off the new workshop. One job I've been meaning to do since last year was to change the sump gasket. Not quite straightforward on the Cup racer as you have to remove the crank pulley and the timing belt protector plate. That being done, I managed to remove 18 of the 21 bolts, but 3 don't want to move, and the torx heads are starting to deform. Any hints on how to tease them loose without drilling/grinding? If they're really far gone, maybe hammering the smallest socket you can get on to them that will bite hard & then replacing them after. Not pretty but if it works!

Any updates on the car given you've been out in it recently? Looks mega.
No updates, only maintenance items (sump gasket replacement, inner driveshaft boot venting). Plus 1st trial with slicks. Thinking about a few improvements (fibreglass panels & lexan windows, engine upgrades), but shipping costs from the UK is prohibitive. Maybe the best idea is to enjoy the car as it is.

Stop shuffling the wheel, you are never in control of a car if you are doing that,
Yes, I am aware of this as many have commented. It's hard to change a lifetime habit, but I'll try to consciously think about it when driving. Maybe imagine that the steering wheel is like an F1 style with no top or bottom section.

Another track day at The Bend last week. Since the last time i have fitted Lexan side windows (I'll do the rear one next week), and I've put the Hankook F200 slicks on the ATS rims. Result was a 3 second/lap improvement. Pretty happy with that.
