Service Schedule, Cambelt etc.

I've read dozens of threads related to cambelts, where to take them when to get them done etc etc. and now its my turn, so sorry to be "that guy".

So the Clio turns 5 years old next month, so I figured it was time to get the "big" service done, cambelt and all. Right?


Well, according to two Renault dealers (Evans Halshaw Sheffield and Harratts Wakefield) the answer is NO. Although RS Tuning said YES. What the actual f*ck?

So here's summary of my answers so far:

Evans Halshaw Sheffield:

No Mr.Owen your car is due only a minor service at ~£156 for the oil and regular filters. Next year you will also require Spark plugs making that service ~£244. The cambelt is only an advisory, so we check it on your service and only replace it if its needed. It is not listed on the service schedule.
(Evans Halshaw gave a rough guide price for cambelt change as 10hrs @ £60ph + parts (~£200) should it need to be done Total Cost for that: £1044 inc plugs and service)


Harratts Wakefield

The service is due at 6 years, 5 years is regular service + Spark Plugs Cost: £277.89



RS Tuning

Advised to have Sparks, Cambelt, Water Pump, both bolt kits, brake fluid and gearbox oil + regular service and fluids. Cost: £771 + VAT


Soooo thats about as clear as mud. At this point I got talking to the guy at Harratts Wakey (who apparently snoops around here with his GW197 cup - if you're reading this, GET POSTING!). He was a top bloke and sent me the Renault service schedule for the car as shown on his system. I've blanked my VIN and Reg. so here it is.





I'll add, this isn't a rant although Evans Halshaw were a bit patchy with information, both RS Tuning and Harratts Wakey were both very helpful in telling me what they thought needed to be done and what the prices were etc.

I just thought I'd put it up on here for others to see and maybe get some feedback.

Spark plugs are a 10 minute job if you have some pin nosed pliers, 10mm socket/spanner and a spark plug socket. I think the plugs themselves are only £24 from Karl. I wouldn't pay £88 for them to be supplied and fitted.

Parts are the same, so it looks like they've changed the 197 interval accordingly now...

i would stick to 5 years robo, god forbid if something happened coming up to the 6th year then renult wouldnt give anything as a good will.

5 years service is, cambet, new water pump, oil change, spark plugs, filters change ( air and pollen ) and some even include brake fluid change.

Its looking that way William. Both Renault dealers said it wasn't due. Only people who have said its 5years are independents who maybe haven't had the memo?

Just rang DDC in Doncaster (Renault Specialist) and they reckon its 5 years, although he did say that he knew it was 6years for 200's so wasn't surprised when I told him what Renault had told me.

DDC price was Service inc. Plugs £200. £30 for Brake Fluid, £50 for Gearbox Oil.

They also quoted £380 for Timing and Water Pump but they don't use Renault parts. These guys were actually pretty sound, I used them last year for my service and they were spot on, they sorted my sticking front brake pins too. http://www.ddconline.co.uk/timing-belts/sport-range


Question is, what to do now? With two Renault dealers telling me its 6years and having the document to prove it I'm inclined to leave it till then. I think I'll get service, plugs, new brake fluid and get them to fix my broken Air Con and stick 12months MOT on it while its in, then switch out the gearbox oil myself.

That's the thing though dude, Renault have told me its not 5 years. I've never heard of one failing, and even at 6years you would presume that Renault still have a safety margin in that. So is it a waste changing it at 5 years?

I'd be inclined to stick to the original 5 year plan.

Mines 5 years old in march 2014 and i'm geared up to having it done then, if renault sent out a bulletin saying it was now 6 years i'd still be inclined to get it done next year.

Mines one of the last 197's too, so should really be no different to the first 200's.

Mine was "due" in May 2012 but will be getting done sometime between now and this May ('07 Plate). Like you say Rob, even at 6Years there must be a safety margin there just incase, it's not like on it's 5th or 6th birthday it'll spontaneously combust if you don't have the work done by midnight. It's a car, not Cinderella!!!

If Renault main dealers are saying 6Years now then surely if anything was to happen you'd have more than enough comeback on it anyway as you have that document with all of your details on and it clearly says 6Years as the interval. It's not like you've made it yourself on MS Paint...

Yep, its got my VIN on the document saying its 6years. I HIGHLY doubt I'm going to be the first person to have a sudden and catastrophic failure of my cambelt/water pump/aux belt etc. just because I'm keeping to manufacturer guide lines.

I'll add as well that the car is also only on 30k miles, its not like its ~60k and I'm trying to stretch it out, but with a year to go (by Renaults claims) and being only half way through the mileage I would hope that I'd be safe.

If this were oil or some kind of preventative maintenance then I might think differently, but (someone correct me if I'm wrong) the point in changing the belts/water pump/bolts etc is to stop them failing after too much use. Until they fail they aren't doing any damage like say 2/3year old oil would do.

I'm there or there abouts Si, they'll be due before next years service, so probs throw them in with this one and keep the 6yr service cheaper

Doesn't look like much wear to me after 5 years, although I'm no expert. If I don't get it done I will mention to whoever does the service (probably DDC) to take a look at the belt and make sure its not visibly worn and needs to be done.

it wasnt bad at all - those few threads starting to fray and the grease from the idler - i would say that the grease loss from the idler would be the biggest concern on the parts removed

excessive stop/start can have an effect on the belt teeth - some ford deisels suffer with it but the belts were changed and made slightly wider iirc to cope

but biggest killer is oil! engine oil leaks can cause them to snap......

mine is a 56 plate and hasn't been done yet, (not down to me only bought it over a month ago) and it still wont be getting done for another 5 month,
although i will :'( if it dose go im trying not to use it much
