Try and go on a cold morning, they all dont like starting but if it really struggles it could be a sign that the car has had a rough life (mine was correctly run in but still waves between 800-1100ish rpm on cold mornings until its been on for 20 or so seconds).
The clutches in the 197 are fairly stiff, when you drive it if it isn't then it could be worn.
On the end of the right hand indicator stalk there are two little buttons, cycle through them "no messages to display" should appear if there are no error messages. Obviously also look for service record at the renault sport intervals as it differs to normal renaults service records.
Check passenger/driver seals (between the door and rear window) these are a common fault and the rubber cracks.
Check the door handles, these too suffered finish issues.
The glove box doors also warped meaning some didnt sit flush.
