What 'should' happen when you pump the brake pedal?

Im only asking as every other car I had when its on and running and you pump the pedal in goes hard, on my clio is stays soft. Having a few issues as the travel on the pedal seems quite far, asked Renault before I picked it up who said its normal, plus at only 6k miles you wouldn't expect too much wear on pads etc

so should it go hard or should it stay soft; excuse the possible innuendo.

should only pump up hard when engine is off

stays "soft" due to engine running and servo working

brakes are notorious for seizing pads in the calipers and this can give poor pedal feel

Hopefully getting them stripped within the next week. New pins and pads on order, should sort out any problems.
