Ticking noise (Video)

Does anyone have any idea what this is? Sounds like it's coming from the crank area

I recently replaced the spark plugs, I think the noise started soon after this but not immediately. I've set the gap to 0.9mm and torqued them up correctly.

The oil level was a tiny bit high (roughly 3mm above max on the dipstick), i've let some out so this is correct now.

I've put some redex injector cleaner in the tank but haven't run it through yet, don't think the noise is from the injector area though.

I don't hear it when I first start the engine in the morning but I think that's because the choke is on and it's not running as smoothly.

Once it's warm I can hear it on idle but as soon as I rev it the noise is gone

air con pump ?

but seriously - need it looking at it might be something minor but on the other hand could be an expensive fault waiting to happen !

I tried putting the air con on and the noise didn't change. I actually couldn't hear the air con pump kick in either, is it meant to be loud on the 197?

Have found out that mark fish motorsport is very local to me and he's one of the best renault specialists in the country, will try and get him to have a look at it

That does sound very similar.

Mine sounds much louder in the video than in real life so we probably have the same problem.

I'm going to do my best to find the cause of this, please let me know if you find out

I was planning to take it to my dealer this month, as it´s still under warranty till Oct. Hope they will find out what´s going on...

Mines booked in with Mark Fish motorsport tomorrow morning, if anyone can find the source of the problem then i'm sure it will be Mark

I will keep you updated

are you just taking it for that or are u having other work done mate?

Just taking it in for this but who knows, might come out having booked other stuff.

Does Mark do live remaps? He seemed to know the cause of the clio's cold start problems which gives good hope that he could map it out.

I sent a video to an old mate from work who's a very experienced mechanic, he said from the video that it sounds like the auxiliary belt tensioner. I hope he's right as that isn't such a critical component, problem comes if it's the cambelt tensioner or something like that!

mark has no rolling road i believe he uses a local company for his fault/mapping for his race cars . top guy though

if it is the aux belt tensioner be careful - if it fails the belt gets dragged in to the cam belt cover and causes the timing belt to jump and in turns bends all the valves !!!!!

:blush:mg: I thought the cambelt was in pretty much a sealed unit.

I'll get Mark to have a look at it, don't even 100% know if that's the problem yet

the belts can "shread" and these shreads get behind the crank pulley and front cover. They get between the belt teeth and sprockets causing the timing to slip and hence valve to piston contact....

Ah, ok that makes sense.

I went to see Mark this morning and when I got there the noise had disappeared! The only explanation we could come up with was maybe a sticker had come loose on the belt/fallen onto the belt and has now fallen off.

Mark's a great bloke though and didn't charge me anything for a quick check over, I'm going back to him on Tuesday for a full wheel alignment, £50 including road testing and he certainly knows what he's doing. Had one of the clio cup race cars sitting outside the workshop as well as a couple of other race cars
