Quote for fitting battery

I've been quoted £51 to have a new battery fitted at my local Renault dealer. I am already a bit annoyed about the quote for the new battery - £117+VAT as I think that is a bit high. I'm wondering if they were taking advantage of me since I'm a woman.... I'm not a petrol head but don't mind DIY - is it not too hard to replace the battery myself?

My car is a 2006 197 model.
 
Hi Nicole - welcome to the forum.
That's a bonkers bit of labour there, it's very easy to do, you just need the right tools. Have you thought about going to Kwik Fit/Halfords etc? Find the best price and whoever is nearest to you should price match it and give you a decent warranty on the battery fitted.

It is a 10minute job. As above Halfords would be able to fit it, still won't be the cheapest but sure to be cheaper than main dealer.

Your best bet is to check out a motorfactors like eurocarparts, buy a good quality battery and take it down to your local garage to be fitted.

Very simple job, even if you don't have the tools now will probably be cheaper to buy them than to pay that labor charge...

Plenty of videos about explaining how to do it, this was the first result and it looks like it's on a mk3 clio so will be familiar:

Wow, thanks everyone for your very prompt responses and great advice. I'll look into buying a good battery (am thinking of Bosch S5 075 or 027) and getting it fitted by a local garage.
 
Renault are not taking advantage of you they are just dealer prices I'm afraid. As said Eurocarparts would be my first choice to buy the battery, the Bosch batteries are very good. 10 min job as said. Just remember to look out your radio code and you will no doubt have to reset your one touch window setting.

Thank you all - good tips about the radio and the windows. And I don't feel like the dealer is taking the mickey now.

I've had my battery die on me before so I've encountered the annoying radio code issue. Not encountered an issue with windows but glad someone has pointed out how to solve it so I won't panic if they go weird.

I was going to say, if you are close to Birmingham / Warwick, I'd gladly fit it, I even have the correct tools in my boot to do it now!

Given that the official Renault dialogue labour time is 0.2hours to replace a battery that quite is crazy. Not to mention the fact that an apprentice is likely to fit it!

Hope you get sorted out somewhere a bit more reasonable.

they should fit the battery for free....that what i would be asking for and expecting!

Update - just bought the Bosch S5 075 with 5 year guarantee for under £90 fitted for free from these guys: https://advancedbatterysupplies.co.uk/

If you go to their shop, be warned, it is not the most salubrious, but that should be ignored - it is the quality of the product and the service that is important. The service was good and quick. They even asked whether I had the car radio code. Car seemed fine with the battery when driving back from the place. Only time will tell if there are problems with it.

Warning for novices - I used their battery chooser on their website - you put in your reg. number and it gives you suggested batteries. Other websites offer this too. I chose a Bosch and when it came to be fitted, it was found to be too tall. So double check the measurements yourself. Luckily, I didn't buy it to then be fitted by someone else.

That is first time i hear that fitting battery is for extra fee.
In my city all batteries are sold as installed, or maybe you can buy separate battery from motonet (like halfords).
Glad to hear you have now battery, and for reasonable price.
