I've got the n/s rear caliper off, what do I clean it with? Solvent stuff?

I used some clutch/brake cleaner from halfords and an old toothbush  worked damn well too.

brake cleaner = awesome - look for some in your local motor factors for about a 3rd of the price of halfords

Didn't bother with any cleaner in the end, got an abrasive strip and just took off all the ****3! Need to take it out for a spin now and see if they are better and if I'll die! Lol!

It's worth getting some proper cleaner, I was a bit sceptical about it but it does help and evaporates away without any residue so no concern over it messing them up.

I always use sand paper to remove the majority of the build up inside the callipers then use a combination of all purpose cleaner and brake cleaner on the outside of the callipers

I had some fast drying solvent, but it wasn't shifting the build up of crud. They were caked in dust.

It'll be ok, it's only weak stuff. When everyone else did their did they notice if the gator for the handbrake cable is torn and split in 2? Both mine are!
