Oil

I found nfp but dont have requirements for tl4 ithink only the latest nfp ver are for tl4 ,the old no( atleast they dont mention that and on the new yes)

I'm not sure if the oil is to blame for the problems, many people passed more then 150k km with this box and oil. Personally im running OE oil for 53k km and no problems. (I have at the movement when I release the clutch in all gears, for example going into 1st releasing the clutch, and then the gearstick moves a bit backwards. I think this is normal )

As I previously mentioned Legend, I think there could be a few instances of user error when these 'boxes have failed. I don't think the oil and the design have helped either. Good to know you are aware of so many that have done up to 95,000 miles. They should really be good for 150,000+ if they were designed properly and are well maintained.

Nice one Rich. Thanks for that. I may well pop down to R-Sport who are local-ish to me and have them replace the NFJ with NFP. As the 'box has under 4,000 miles, a change to NFP should see me fine.

Rich do you know when the 'boxes started shipping with steel baulk rings rather than the brass? Mine is a late (Sept) '12 car. Fingers crossed it was part of the final build run that got the steel.

Theoretically, if they now have steel rings, an oil with brass compatibility shouldn't be needed. Although to definitively find that out one would have to crack the 'box open, or it's going to be Russian roulette. I'll stick to the NFP!

I'm afraid I don't, I've seen a few threads over the years with speculative comments but until I had the box rebuilt it didn't know for sure if they were or not. My guess though would be that no Clio 3RS's shipped with steel syncros and it's only a subsequent revision to the part??
I also don't know if it's all syncros or not that have been revised? My spare donor box had only covered 27k and showed little wear on anything, I chose however to replace 3rd/4th anyway with new as they are the problematic ones.

If it goes again frankly I'll investigate sticking a DSG in!!

I track and occasional motorway commute (in crappy British traffic) the car, so 2 scenarios where a DSG is ideal. I do very little in the way of spirited road driving nowadays where a manual is hard to beat because of the tactility it offers.
I'm less opposed to a good DSG/DCT type box vs all the other modern trends like downsizing and turbos, and fake sound!!

Dont diss fake sound TB Rich mine makes a mean spaceship noise!

lol! I'd forgotten the mk4 has that, but I think it's a speaker thing isn't it? It's the symposers or whatever they're called that I find more pointless I think (like the GT86 has). You have overtly sporting cars yet they get over refined. There are enough derivatives of cars like 'M Sport' and 'S Line' to keep the 'masses' happy, leave the top level sporting models just that - sporting!! </rant>

Yeah speakers, it's funny when new people get in the car, my mate from work loves it, has him laughing so hard, not a feature I use thoughol

Ok thanks fellas ,i made up my choice ,ill go for nfp ( latest version that fits tl4) i think is the best oil for this box available atm! Its like the old nfj but better !and if ill not find so fuchs
Thx for yout help

Hi guys i ordered it,and i noticed it has the lowest kinematic visc 40 c from all oils ive checked and the other specs pretty same-+
Most of them has46+ and this nfp is 36 o.o the lower the better at 40 c heat?

It has a better pour point, which means it's thinner when actually cold. So will help with the stubbon gear issues we have - though mostly that's a clutch/slave issue.

Also the 40 and 100 values are indeed thinner. Thicker does not mean more protection though, far from it. Thicker just means the oil gallery's in our **** synchros simply can't disperse the oil adequately. In fact the specialists who rebuilt my box were adament that running 10w-40 semi was the best option and they've been using it for years and years without a problem at all.
The thinner values of NFP is why I said it is interesting to note the higher grade NFP oil is thinner than NFJ - yet Fuchs Sintofluid and Redline are both actually thicker than NFJ. Redline at least contains friction modifiers for helping with synchromeshes for this exact reason of it being on the thicker side of 75w-80 oil, and is why I would use Redline on a worn/noisy box. Howeber Fuchs Sintofluid simply has no compelling reason to be used in our boxes. I've trashed a 4th gear synchro on the stuff so feel the practical matches the theory this time.

The nano particles in NFP (potassium borate) is also higher specification than either of the other 2. If you've ordered NFP then good, no need for angry smiley!!

Depending on mileage, but it's likely that unless you've rebuilt your box and replaced some synchros then the years of running on cooking oil, sorry NFJ, will have probably caused the onset of future issues already.

Well gb still runing ok 54k km genuine oil and atb quaife for 40k-+
But look at my other post i describe there some new noise

Just read it now, - I don't read many threads on here now really.

Sounds a strange issue, crunching noises when accelerating but the gear remains the same. got a video of the noise?
