Melting steering wheel update

I have looked at loads of Clios before settling on the one we bought, both 182s and 197s. I did not see a single car out of around 20 odd that did not have a blistered steering wheel, I just accepted that it was a known problem! Had a Ford Mondeo that I put 90k miles on, no wear on the steering wheel!
My own car, an Alpina D3, which has different, and softer leather than a std 3 series wheel, also is good as new after 105k!

Can anyone provide a link or contact to someone who can retrim the wheel in Scotland? ours is a 56 with 50k miles on it, so can't see me getting any joy going to Renault, but would like to get the wheel back to "as new" status ASAP, thanks!

hi just to clarify something about the steering wheels , the mega expensive wheel is the oem one and doesn't come with an airbag ( i have feeling roy they damaged your old one thats why it took so long to fit ) the cheaper wheel used to be on the ruk accesories page ( i sold one to phil200 last year) hope this helps ,

Hi Guys

New to the forum but very interested in melting steering wheel issue.

I have a May 2008 Clio 197 over here in Southern Ireland - now clocked up 84k KM. Steering wheel has been going for a year and Renault Ireland told me to do one when I tried to make a warranty claim. Don't have the support you guys seem to get from Renault OEM in the UK (although the service manager is a top lad at local dealer and very helpful).

My wheel is now looking like a snake that's halfway through shedding its skin and feels about the same (

I was quoted €700.00 ex vat/labour last month for a replacement s/wheel from my local dealer but just can't bring my self to fork this out (had to replace steering column, 4 shocks 4 discs/pads, engine mount, tie rod end and 2 new OEM alloys this year due mostly to sustained damage from the country roads over here.....) steering column was just out of warranty gggrrr.

Anyway Luke3 seems to have cracked it and mentioned about a replacement OEM wheel without Airbag but i'm struggling to find PN and where to source from in postings (am i being thick here?).

Can some of you lads advise please and also provide details of a friendly local Franchised dealer in the UK who I could reach out to?

Prices are well loaded over here and Vat is now going upto 23% in Jan so time for mail order me thinks.

Thanks all

Try asking twingogeekeo, he is a member on here who works for Renault parts UK. He supplies parts very cheap (Cheaper than the dealer) and might even be able to ship to ireland if you're lucky!

I think the steering wheel should cost you ~£150 GBP

I got a wheel of Twingogeekeo, 6 weeks or so ago and is classed as accessory wheel, but it is identical the full fat i had fitted and came with the silver renaultsport badge that goes over bottom spoke

part number: 7711421172

think i will order another one so in 2-3 years time i have a spare;/

I'm gonna keep old 1 and then get that re-skinned in alcantara, ready for that day.

Also amazed at how soft new wheel is when gripping it compared to the old one, so this sun (or whatever it is) affecting the outer skin is also making the internal stuff dry and hard as well.

i dont drive mine so i have no clue how it feels but the wife says it feels chunkier if thats the right word

yes that as well it does, it's actually strange at first as it looks the same but feel wise you know somehting is different

perhaps it's also shrinking give it 10 years and it'll be 3" smaller in diameter and 1cm" thick

Hey guys,

I'm a newbie and have been reading this post for a while as like many others I've got a 'melting' steering wheel.

Renault UK have now got pictures of the damage to my wheel and have offered to pay 50% of the cost of replacing the wheel, which would leave me paying £220 which includes parts, labour etc.

Has anyone got suggestions as to whether I should just pay this and be done with it or try and negotiate instead? I was told this is Renault's final position but the dealer told me off the cuff I shouldn't pay any more than 10% of the replacement cost.

Also, what is the difference in the steering wheel you guys are talking about above and the original part? Is it airbag-less?

As mentioned before speak to Twingogeekeo, as the accessory wheel i got from him is direct replacement and does not come with airbag as that will need to be swapped over, but does come with the cruise control buttons already attached and that silver renaultsport bit that is usually an extra item. But it is a perfect match and a lot less money than what RUK are quoting
