Megane gearbox

That's well low isnt it, no wonder it's smoother, must be loads better on fuel

From memory mine revs at 3400 at 70 which is fairly high by any counts

Been on the motorway this morning to check the rpm ! The rpm at 90 was 3000 and 2750 at 80.

That is a massive difference! It will feel like a completely different car alright. As you say though Nicky - if you are wanting to use it to cruise for long distances in then it is perfect.

I know, but it clearly won't get to the limiter so I wonder just how far it will go?

The later 'box has a top speed of around 140mph IIRC, which I think will be at the limiter, where the engine is still producing plenty of power, with a longer 'box revs will be lower, possibly below the peak power so it might not even get there.

the diesel box will seriously blunt performance/acceleration in the top 2 gears - on the motorway you will have to be travelling at a higher speed to maintain momentum or be changing down to keep the speed up - given the peaky power delivery of the 197

like i said i dont know all the technical details, there is no difference in acceleration in the lower gears, i dont let my bf drive my clio often (there always seems to be someone who wants to race him !!) but i did let him borrow it a couple of week ago, he came home amazed, his words " just had a couple of lads in a 200 thinking they were clever, dropped it into 2nd and wasted em !"

Absolutely, the just feels like it needs to be changed up a gear - shame they could'nt squeeze in a 7th gear purely for cruising on the motorway

I agree 100%.. my girlfriend said "are you going to change gear or what" the first time she was in it on a dual carriageway. "I'm in 6th" I replied, although coming from a 3.4L e46 could hardly believe it myself!

It would be great to keep it std. in 1st, 2nd 3rd 4th, 5th and just change 6th so it revs a bit lower for cruising - 32mpg cruising at 70mph is a bit duff nowadays!

I'd love to see some technical comparisons to the standard 197 box. Sounds like a decent mod as long as the essence of the Clio remains. Wonder if it's slower or even faster?

That is the thing though the essence is gone, what gives the Clio its character is the revvy nature of the engine, short ratios and quick acceleration. Putting significant;y longer ratios on will blunt the performance and change the car - yeah you will get a more relaxed drive - but I don't want that, I would have bought a diesel

Got it in 1 paul. Drive a turbo thgh paul and over 3k they shift like nothing ive felt before. Went out in a seat 20v turbo the other day and it made mine feel like a tortoise. Watching that boost needle jump was like porn.

Point im making is turbo's need wider ratios to accomodate for that "on boost" power, great in seans, bic's, mikes or whoever has a blown engine but i bet its lifeless on n/a engines

Cheers Paul.
