I do an 80 mile commute. I work shifts so have blocks of time off but I can do 540 miles in 7 days. Other weeks I may do anywhere from 0-540. Mostly motorway with a small B road to blast through. Little to no town driving (I average 29-30mpg)
This is why I went for standard seats and non cup as I wasn't sure I could live with the stiffer suspension back when I was doing a 26 mile commute. I never have any soreness.
My petrol costs might make some people pale!
At the end of the day only you know what's best for you. I work long hours (anywhere from 0-90 hours a week) to keep myself supported and I take a lot of extra shifts.
Do what suits your situation now. You can always come back to the clio later on, just as you said you'd have to start from scratch and things maybe cheaper for the clio then/you may have more money etc.
