Yeah it's not easy you can test it buy taking the wheel off and brake disc then lever the shock up and down, I got a prybar onto the wishbone and levered against the hub the brake discs sits on. Then try to listen for where the knock is coming from, the shock knocks about mid way up and is easily noticeable
I got a mechanic friend to change my shocks in the end as its a ballache to do and I didn't want the hassle ended up costing £75 for both shocks replaced + parts obviously
