In fairness the £17000 quote isn't that bad for a Clio 197 at your age and driving experience. £1700 is £141 ish a month and if you can pay it all off on say a credit card and then 0% transfer it you'll save a bit too. Insurance company's charge like 10-12% for the privilege of you paying them monthly which I find an absolute rip off!
There's a lad I work with who passed his test about 2-3 months ago and he had a crappy old 206 1.4 and it was costing him over £200 a month with a gps box fitted too, his postcode area isn't the best.
He's swapped it for a Honda Civic 2.2 i-CDTI the other week which has a lot more power and he's gone with a different insurer for around £160 a month I think he was saying, with no gps box this time.
Madness really, the Honda is vastly more powerful than the 206 yet it's substantially cheaper for him to insure.
