There are smaller countries than Scotland that survive just fine, it's all in how's it's run. Though the finances of Scotland are fundamentally intertwined with those of the UK.

For example the finances of all the civil service pensions etc would be fun trying to work out and that's just one small part of it all. I can't see it happening though myself. Would cost them way too much, but that's just my opinion.
