Hi looking at buying a 197 F1 (currently have a 172 Track Car)

Hi everyone I'm currently after a Clio 197 (in paticularly an F1) and just wanted to know some info on the 4th gear issue please and anything to look out for (I'm going to read the buyers guide now just anything extra to look for) I'm thinking about Masons in the for sale section and have spoken to him already (via Clio Sport forum) and like the fact he has posted about the 4th gear notch and not just hidden it (why I prefer owners club cars) just wanted some more info on it, cost of a new box being worst case and are they a luck of the draw for failing and could last a long time with the notch being there already?

Little about me...

I came over from the Clio Sport site as some people recommended the buyers guide on here. I have just sold my 63 plate BMW 125d about a week ago as I do about 3k a year and couldn't justify having it sat on the drive just loosing money plus the fact I fancy a small hatch (never had one in my youth bar a R32 when I was 18 wasn't exactly small though lol) and I seen the Liquid Yellow F1 for sale and really liked it as a nice little car for the money and what I would be using it for and I currently have a 52 plate 172 Cup I use for track (Stripped, rear cage, buckets/harnesses, power flow cat back, ITG carbon intake, coilovers and a quaife LSD) and enjoy it so thought the F1 would be a nice little toy to have on the road. I've been driving the 172 on the road and my missus Nissan Quashqia (spelling) so hopefully won't remember the BMW interior enough to miss it lol

Stu.

Hi there and welcome along!

Masons is a lovely car, though I might be bias lol. With regards to the gearbox issues, you can get the synchro replaced or else buy a recon box which I believe can be picked up for around £400.

Good luck in your search for a 197 .

Thanks Eddie. . Do you know how much for a new synchro off the top of your head think that's the only thing I'm concerned about if I'm being honest.

Few pics of my Clio from Oulton the other week. (Hope they work)

There was a member who had the synchro replaced and I do believe it cost £500 but that was taking into account labour for removing and refitting the box.

Thanks very much Eddie. Also a quick one anyone know how much the it is to have the belts done ( does it have a dephaser like my 172?) Would probably use a specialist to have the work done and I'm based near Liverpool so don't mind travelling to the likes of Birch down for servicing as I belive they are very good.

Yes they have a dephaser, I would use someone who knows what to do as mine was replaced twice in a few hundred miles due to the previous owners being tight and someone's incompetence.

Welcome to the forum

The cost of the belt change can vary from one garage to the next, but it isn't cheap - I've seen prices from £300 up to £700. I believe the majority of that is labour, as it's quite a long job.

Good luck in your search for an F1 - pick of the bunch in my biased opinion

Hey welcome, I wouldn't worry too much about the gearbox issue, there's a lot more cars with gearboxes are totally fine. A test drive will reveal all  good luck with the search.

welcome to the forum..
