Front bearng shield !?

While disassembling my front hubs to replace the balljoints I also took out the bearing carriers to give them a check. Only when randomly looking online for parts I noticed that some replacements bring what seems to be a dust shield that mine does not have...
Is this the reason why the inner face of the bearing and the ABS ring were covered in crap? Was this only added to later models? Mine's a '08 R27

That’s the rear ABS sensor holder, for some reason they supply it with the front bearings
 
That makes no sense whatsoever!
Specially when front bearings get caked while in the hole...
