Failed gearbox question

Does it just crunch when the synchromesh go?

200 is booked in on Thursday for the front end clunk and and not going in gear.

Sat the other day just not being able to get anything! Clutch was fully down, tried several times but just wouldn't go in.

Usually does it in R, 1, 2 & 3 but normally put it in 4th or 5th and it fixed it but now they are getting impossible to find.

So the question is, am I likely looking at synchro or clutch hydraulics?

Never had it but with all the reading I have done on here I would say gearbox :worried:

Cheers Roy, In an odd kind of way I'm hoping so.

It's still under warranty and with the new synchromesh that will hopefully fix the fault I'd rather get it done and dusted rather than argue it at a later date.

Although having spent circa £150k plus on new cars with renault in the last 9 years I'd expect 100% contribution outside of warranty.

Have you had the car from new?

If so how would you say you've treated the gearbox? Do you rush changes etc?

Mine's perfect at 35k miles but i am very aware when pressing on of the fragile boxes and don't rush/force and of the gears home.. I'm hoping this will prolong its life.

I just don't understand how if this is so common - which it seems to be - Renault have not been forced to issue a recall as surely there is something critically wrong with the components build and/or design for them fail so prematurely..

It worries me for the future as I don't cover many miles so a failure at a later date well out of warranty is not good news...

And...what have Renault actually identified as the problem with all of the failures?

I had a 197 from new which I traded in for the 200, both with same mileage on 30k and neither have been miss treated.

The 197 was fine and the 200 was fine up until around a month ago. The wife uses the 200 as her daily and I take the 265 trophy. She gets upto 38.5MPG! So in no way is it raced or rushed in gears.

When it was my daily again it was very rarely pushed. I'm a stickler for speed limits an due to my job speed doesn't entertain me like it would many.

So in answer to your question no the gearbox gets little or no load that you would expect. Ask Lee Jones his lasted 13 miles I think and they were all motorway.

Cars brake down from time to time, some do some don't but the fact they have revised the synchromesh points to them knowing there is an issue that isn't the owners fault.

Book it in with dealer then go straight to RUK

currently they are offering 50% goodwill- which leaves £800 out of pocket-

Push for 100% settlement

& LOL at 13 miles is that 13k or 13 actual miles- I sold a LY one to my neighbour- his went at 5k ( done under warranty )

Yours sounds like mine, and I'm taking it in on Monday. From cold it just doesn't like going into gear.

Fault usually lies with the synchromesh eating its self, Renault recently introduced a revised mesh. You normally get a crunching of the gears to indicate a failure.

However mine doesn't crunch but refuses to go into gear at times. Hence me wondering if it is fist signs of mesh failure or clutch related.

my synchro went and gave a crunch then when i got it back supposidly fixed i couldnt get it into gear and turned out that its the linkage that had come off.

My box was replaced with 50% and they would pay anymore mine was 21K 08. It also depends on if you bought it from a renault dealer or not

No 13!!

Mine is 10 plate so I expect 100% from Renault but even if it were outside I'd expect it with the amount I've spent on cars.

I'll let you know how I get on.

Warm or cold sometimes it won't go in, other times it's fine.

It's new from a dealer with full dealer history. 9th Renault in 9 years all new including 4 clios and a megane.
