Clio 200 K24

Hi all. This is my story of ownership so far. Theres plenty planned and il endeavour to record everything here.

This conversion came about after i'd owned the car for a couple years, ownership became inevitable after i'd had a few track sessions at Goodwood in a friends 200.

I'd been doing track days for sometime there, at that time i had a nicely put together Mk5 Golf GTI track car. Jumping from one to the other i couldn't believe how good the Clio was out, basically stock, straight out of the box. That experience stuck with me and i figured at some point i needed my own one.

That came about a couple of years ago. A friend of a friend had acquired a basic spec car with decent history and a rebuilt gearbox in px for a race car and wanted shot of it. He had a deal in place but i offered to relieve some delivery hassle from that deal and take it away at the same money. At 2k i couldn't not own it. I popped it on the drive and handed it to the wife under the guise of a runabout.

I was aware it'd had light damage to the front and rear end, but it was purely bumper damage. It was easily sorted. It needed a front bumper fix (a bodge which would go on to haunt every track day i attended) and a new rear bumper. Some tyres. pads, discs and fluid, but was effectively ready to go. I popped some PBS race pads in, some HEL lines and some fresh ATE 200 fluid. Found some speedlines with some rainsports on them and waited for the first chance to get out in it.

I was running my E36 as an occasional trackcar, that needed some jobs doing so i booked some days in the Clio, took it to Oulton Park for its first outing in the wet and had a pretty good time, went on to do a couple of Goodwood half days in it, all of which were a bit damp. I'd not had a dry day yet.

I began to realise i was leaning into the Clio for days over the E36. The 36 was the third i'd owned in as many years. The first was full track car 328, the second an Alpina b3.2 touring converted to manual and the third was a coupe which struck a balance between the two. Retained the interior, fitted some Recaro SPG's, a 3.3 Alpina derived engine which was running throttle bodies on Delta scs management. KW clubsports etc etc.
It was a fun car, but it was a far cry form something i could just hop in and go. The Clio offered convenience and i bought into that in a big way.

That bumper fix kept coming back to haunt me. I got black flagged at least twice with it flapping about. caught on camera one day. It needed replacing. i just kept cable tying/taping it back up. A curb strike saw me tear a chunk off it in this state, so i new it needed to go. Finding one was not going to be easy.

As you can see, it wasnt exactly 'solid' in its fitment

I'd booked a last minute day at Goodwood and instantly remembered i'd neglected to look over the front end after it had felt a bit loose and nervy on corner entry on the last day i had done. That was a wet day so speeds had been low and in hindsight i'd have had a better time if i'd have spent some time sorting this problem out. But time was my enemy.
It had an recent alignment done so i knew it was straight. I figured i had no time to get whatever the issue solved so figured i'd at least work it out and drive round the problem. Bushes, arms and joints were all in good order. The front shocks were leaking (i later found out a spring was also cracked) so i got on with the day.
I'd bought a spare setup for my Garmin to run that in both the E36 and the Clio and popped my go pro in and got going. Here's one of those sessions. Its pretty clear i had no confidence in the front of the car. I'm a gear lower than i should be on the entrance to St Marys and Woodcote, and feeling my way through Madgwick was a bit un nerving but as a first proper dry day it was a lot of fun. I wasn't particularly sympathetic to it on this day.

I decided it was well overdue some love. I booked it in with rentune locally for the belts/depahser/alternator/oil service/plugs etc and had a new set of Bilstein B14's fitted with new top mounts. Of course the handling took a big leap. I'd got the E36 back and booked a couple of sessions in that, so the clio took a back seat for a few months.

The E36 started to offer some frustrating issues. ITB's are great, right up until the point they're not. I began to regret going down that route. Not only that but the noise level also limited days i could book and they're generally more expensive. i got a bit disolussioned with ownership. Having put together what i'd always wanted, it wasn't the car i needed. It didn't fit any more.

I took the Clio on another half day. It came away with a 4th gear crunch but had run all day. I found myself looking at the limiting/weak factors on the Clio. What could be done to raise the ceiling on those limits. Could i replicate the ethos of the E36 but retain more reliability and ease of ownership?
I wanted to stay NA. I got in touch with Dan at Custom Production as i had seen some K swapped cars appear and was intrigued to understand how close to and oem feel the conversion could have.

That escalated fairly quickly and i booked it in for a k24 swap. It got trailered up in May and was back at the end of August just in time for a ring trip.

In that time the E36's fate had been sealed and it was parted out.

The k24 seemed a sensible route to take. More readily available than the k20, cheaper, more torque etc. The box and lump weight are close to the clio's setup and the integration using ECU Master and the renault system would see me retain all the oem function that car had previously.

RPM would be maxed out at 7500rpm. 50 degree VTC implemented on the cam timing, and intake and exhaust would see decent power. The gearbox spec would be an EP3 unit with a 5.1 final drive and a CRV/Accord 6th for cruising.

The engine was a low mileage JDM Odyssey k24 and received a new chain, sump off inspection, refreshed cam cover etc before mated with the box. everything painted up and ready to fit.

Dan kept me up to date as things progressed. The car had got trailered up as i'd had a bit of a mishap with the key just before booking day. The only one i had that worked was in my pocket on a morning we had heard that a dog was trapped in a sleuce gate up the river from our workshop. We jumped in the river to cut it out with a grinder....i thought id emptied my pockets.
Dan very kindly offered to sort it if i got it trailered up, he also sourced a replacement bumper for it whilst it was with him which i'd really struggled with.

You can just about make out the oil cooler mountings at the bottom of the rad. The conversion uses a meg radiator, everything was removed and cleaned before refit and the exhaust was then fabbed up. I'd opted for a sports cat and a quiet back box as ultimately it was going to get used for road trips just as much as track days.

Once finished it headed off for mapping to J.Cal at tdi south where it made 235hp, road tested and then returned to me ready for a ring trip in the first week of September. Out of the box its been fantastic. The way it gets down the road now is awesome. So much fun. A quaiffe got fitted during the build and that additionally levels it up.

When it got back to me i put the new bumper on, some used MRF's on another set of wheels and got it prepped for Germany.

The quality of conversion is exactly what i'd hoped for. Jumping straight into long road trip might have seemed like a bit if a risk but i've consequently got a lot of faith in it now. We drove out to the morning and got two TF laps done that evening and had a great overall trip. I covered 1500 miles in two weeks of it coming back.

Theres some snags to sort, but none of them have been prohibitive to using it in any way. the fuel sender needs replacing as the gauge is reading off, but some maths showed it got 34mpg running between 70-80 on the way there and back. The long sixth is an absolute joy on the motorway out there. It does limit out in 5th at 120mph down the hill towards schwedenkreuz, and a shift into sixth sees you just at the edge of vtec so it suits shorter circuits/fast road. Im happy with the sacrifice for the cruising rpms though!

Really looking forward to it!. I've had a look over your build, its looking amazing. Are you planning any days there yourself? I'd love to have a look around it.
Cheers, yeah I should be, it’s up the road for me.

Never enough time to get a job done completely. Ive been doing interior bits whe i can over the last 6 months. Pre conversion, I had a set pf SPG XL's that i'd colour coded for the last BMW i had. I took them apart again and painted the backs in preparation for some mounts, as and when i could sort some!

They ended up on some Sparco base mounts. i added some adjustable runners to the drivers seat. It added some height but the position is still low enough.

When the car came back from Custom production there was a couple of elements that couldn't be completed. One of those was the shifter. A ZeroPointOne shifter was (and likely still is) in the development pipeline for the K swap. One was ordered but the decision was made to fit an oem fitment shifter in the meantime.
That involved some degree of cut and shut to the oem shifter surround due to cable location. I decided to tidy that up a bit and made some carbon plate up for the cable cover and moulded a curved section to sit into the oem gear stick surround. Its in, but ill take it back out and clearcoat it when i find some more time.
Neatens things up in the meantime. Hopefully the ZPO version will materialise at somepoint

Next up was the acquisition of a Safety Devices half cage. I very much wanted to run a set of rear doorcards with this setup and could see that was a bit of a challenge. I managed to get around that with some careful trimming and a patient couple of mates to help me manhandle everything in and out several times to make it work.

A section of ply got cut and trimmed to cover the rear seat section and a cover for the drop down to the floor. I also knocked up a couple of small pieces of trim to sit around the cage feet.

Overall it went in fairly easily. Sabelt harness are yet to be fully fitted. I bought some Puretrack harness mounts, but the sparco seat bases don't quite allow enough space for them to sit in a helpful mount spot on the exhaust tunnel side of each seat. I've ended up buying some spreader plates and harness eyes which ill get fitted when i find a spare evening. Battery got swapped for an Odyssey pc680. I've ordered some 6mm rivnuts to relocate that to the rear arch section. For the minute i've had to mount the cage flat to the old conversion location.

I fitted some 21/18mm pure motorsport spacers. Ran them for a few weeks and took them off. It just didn't feel like it wanted to turn in, lost some of the rotation i liked. Im surprised so many owners run them, but maybe its just exacerbating a problem/something worn i'm yet to find under the car, but my gut tells me its just the spacers.
Whats odd is the car felt 'OK' on the et50 Rota wheels but having deliberated it for a while i sold them. I figured a bigger spend on a better set of tyres fitted to an oem rim is going to offer me more confidence. I found a deal on some A052's and popped them on the spare set of cup style wheels ive got.

Booked Goodwood for the 5th so ill go through the car well in advance to see if theres anything that needs swapping out. I figure the trackdays an opportunity to build up some confidence in the conversion on some familiar ground. I'll put the Garmin in and see how it gets on.

I'd had Goodwood booked for the 5th April for sometime. Unintentionally this has become a year on year date, the past three years i've done days there on the 5th. Weathers always been a mixed bag previously, friday was no exception!

I've been fairly busy at work recently. The cars taken a bit of a tumble in priority, but i did have the chance to have it up on a ramp and check it over a few weeks ago, everything seemed sound enough. I figured i'd just rock up and see how it went.

The track surface was damp/wet on arrival but there was no forecast for rain so i figured it'd clear up fairly quickly. Got on track straight away and instantly got caught out with cold rears

The wife dropped in for some lunch and came out for a couple of laps. I could tell she wasn't that comfortable lapping quickly so that didn't last too long. i headed out and began to build some confidence back up. There was an instant limitation with gearing. I knew it was the going to be the case around here, 6th just isn't useful as its so long. I'd played around with it heading into Fordwater but it just felt like it instantly started to coast, so offered no confidence. I chose top hang 5th out all day. 120 on the limiter wasnt that comfortable..... but its a Honda engine right!...right?

more on that later

This was the first opportunity to compare the car directly against the F4R/TL4 setup. The car weighs the same as it used to, has the same suspension and brake setup. OEM geometry and wheel offset, a touch more power but less gearing. I wasn't expecting miracles but i was very happy with the improvement.

Aside from directly improving my driving! i can see where i could gain way more lap time from modification.

Better suspension - Bilsteins are great for the fast road and a bit of track, but i feel i could gain way more confidence with a suspension upgrade. I need more confidence entering the high speed section at madgewick, i think that would also give me more confidence to run a wider entry into St marys enabling me to carry more speed on entry. I can gain more exit speed out of Lavant by braking/rotating earlier to get on the power sooner handing me more time down the back straight.

Longer gearing - a standard EP3 6th back in would help here. The 5.1 final drive I have is great...i just need a 6th. I opted for a longer 6th - at the point of gearbox build - sourced from a CRV to really make long journeys comfortable. Its perfect for that, but theres a real offset to that at Goodwood.

Less weight - Its got to be around stock weight with the halfcage installed, offset against the oem seats/SPG recaros. Weight reductions would make a difference everywhere.

I popped the catalyst camera into the car to get some more interesting footage, seemed to work quite well. There was plenty of fun to be had. ill pop some of them below. The E30 had more confidence to carry speed everywhere i'm looking to gain time. I tend to get mesmerised/distracted by rwd cars moving around in front of me under cornering braking. It was going well every session it was out.

Im not a brilliant driver and i've got plenty of room for improvement! I'm sure another day will see me knocking on the door of somewhere close to a 1.30.xx

Biggest issue to address is that Honda engine durability....I put a rod through the block at the end of the day.

434174938_25214906888156915_3801315287052182904_n.jpg

Its back at the workshop and ill investigate further this week but my assumption the oil pump cavitated as i over revved it on down change, alongside limiter bashing all day in 5th :grimacing: I think i had it coming.

A k20 oil pump in another k24 and ill be good to go. Could be a while as work/life is so busy but it'll be back running soon enough.

I do! I’ve popped over a fwend request. Would be good to compare. It’s a handy bit of kit. I haven’t started deep diving into all its data yet, but I can see it being a real help.

Absolute complete tangent, any chance you can get some photos of how the lower part of the radiator sits in the subframe when you get chance? That sits far tidier than the one in my Megane conversion does.

Of course! I’ll be under there over the next few days, I’ll grab some

One year on and the cars now been revived. A change in job for me meant priority didn't really fall in favour of the clio. That being said, pulling onto the drive every day, confronted with the poor thing sat there disabled, would at least act as a daily prompt to find the time to organise a replacement engine.

It became clear that I wasn't going to find a decent enough window to get the job done on the drive. Workshop space was scarce at the new job, even if there was an opportunity there I woudn't have felt right about imposing.

A few freshly built engines came up for sale, but finding someone i could entrust to install it locally was challenging. Sensible head on and I called Dan at CP. We discussed options for getting the car back to Doncaster for a second round of engine swap. Having settled on a new spec with him the engine build was initiated. When it was ready the car got transported up for fitment and was back with me within 10 days or so.

The opportunity to upgrade had also been taken at this point. Rather than a straight K24 I opted for a K24 bottom end and K20 head. A baffled sump and oil pump swap was also installed. All stock Honda items bar the sump baffle. Nothing too wild at all, just a basic setup. More RPM now available and the potential to increase power later on is left on the table.

A few additional changes were made to adjust coolant routing and a suitable intake manifold swap were also taken care of by Dan at the same time.

In a bizzare incident the passenger rear window disintegrated, no obvious reason! came home one day and it had shattered, still intact, but it'd completely shat itself. Checked the cctv and theres absolutley no reason for it. Weird. Debated going poly windows but resisted. Instead located a second hand replacement and got on with putting a it in. Twat of a job to avoid filling the car with glass though.

A booking with Jcal was made for mapping and i loaded it up on the trailer and headed off to see what it'd make. At this point it felt like it had been living on a trailer for an absolute age, but the end seemed in sight. Arriving late in the afternoon it got strapped to the rolling road a IAmotorsport in Sittingbourne and Jesse set about tweaking the mapping.

491027064_1114784240452950_4474375090332190835_n.jpg

It started off well enough but as the afternoon went on it wasn't reaching the numbers Jesse felt it should be achieving. All bases were covered - including a compression test as you never know! - but nothing was clearly showing up as the culprit. The engine yielded 245hp and we called it a day. Made a firmware upgrade to the ecu and also corrected a voltage setting and she went back on the trailer.

When the was first converted and in stock K24 form it also ran approximately 20hp and 20lbft less than expected. i feel theres a bolt on issue. Exhaust being my main assumption. Jesse pointed out the K engines do like a long runner and that may have some advantage, but he also reiterated the exhaust wasn't really showing as a major issue. Somethings holding it back. Not hugely important for the minute, it'd certainly be nice to figure out though.

The journey home was somewhat of a nightmare. The Navara i was using is a work vehicle we use regularly launch and recover boats down slipways. At some point along the M25 on a winters night in the pissing rain the trailer electrics died at the plug on the pickup. Probably one of the sketchiest things thats happened to me on the road in some while.

I noticed almost straight away and banged the hazzard warning lights on. 2 miles from Clackett lane services i decided a stationary, unlit trailer was more of a risk than making the two miles to the services for repair. There was at least two close calls in that time. Fortunately a clued up Discovery driver had noted the scenario and pulled in behind me with his hazzards on and shepparded me into the services. Massive relief to get away without incident. I thanked the guy and began figuring the issue out. Corrosion was the only culprit, a bit of contact cleaner and some foil i had from an food wrapper were the only tools that were going to help here and luckily it worked out, not perfect as id lost indicators, but importantly was lit back up and able to make it back to Southampton.

With it back up and running an MOT was booked. Back on the road and it felt great! The extra rpm and higher vtec give it a slightly different feel. I'm sure that'll really be felt on circuit. Looking forward to getting back to some days. Ive been using it for an occasional commuter to stress test it a bit. Its been bang on as i expected.

On a ring trip a couple of years back id spotted a clio vln car on a set of Motec Mcr1's and set about a side quest to make a set my own. A facebook nurburging local parts page popped up with a set for sale so a deal was done. They were held onto until i could get them repatriated. A vehicle moving specialist was empty on a return journey and i asked if they'd be willing to bring them back and within 48hrs they were with me and mounted to the car! Rene - who sold me the wheels - said he'd throw in some spares he no longer needed. Those spares turned out to be a real surpise! A full set of brand new front and rear Hawk pads in the compund he'd run on his VLN car and set of brand new front discs, some brand new meyle drop links and some very nice seat bases i may swap mine out for. Massively generous of him and hugely appreciated.

Jury is out on the wheels currently. Mainly as it handles so much better with standard fitment. I maybe need to build some camber in to build some confidence? but the rotation and feedback i get on standard offset wheels is way more confidence inspiring. I feel like all i've done is effectively widen the track of the car and reduced the margin of feel you get from it on the limit. It'll still drive fast, its just more 'twitchy' at the limit. Not a fan.
Maybe theres more advice to be had on that aspect, would an addition of more camber improve that? the cars running completely standard geometry and standard top mounts. I like the car when its moving around a bit. Maybe i've got to persevere and further mod to find the benefit? Any feedback and peoples experience are very welcome! I'm not the guy that'll ignore sensible offered advice. Some suggestion of direction would be great. They're an 8j et50 wheel for reference (felt the same thing on my older Rota wheels)

I clearly need a caliper refurbish all round as they're firing an esp fault at me occasionally. Expected as i've not refreshed that aspect, just everything except the calipers themselves them since i've owned the car. A couple of violent grabs at low speed have suggested theres an abs triggering issue as well. Looking back at footage of the day the engine detonated itself, i can hear the rear pads/calipers starting to squeal in the back ground as the day went on. Either way the system needs a refresh!

A really good mate has ventured back into 200 ownership this week, so that'll undoubtedly spur a flurry of trackday prep and a summer of trackdays wherever we can fit them in.
