Center Silencer

Recently purchased my first 197 after deciding the sell the 200EDC.
I love the car and overall I have no immediate issues.

I was told by the previous owner that the centre silencer had been removed which sounds good day-to-day however since doing a few motorway trips the drone does get a bit too much.
I have also been reading into the flat-spot issue and it appears this could be worsened by the removal of the center silencer? (I am planning to clean and re-seat the MAF sensor and throttle body too)

My main question is where to get a Center Silencer from? and is it a simple installation?
Or is it worth spending a little extra for a Milltek Catback system? (Which I assume will be a nice sounding in the high revs but not too much day to day?) - I have also read that people have issues with these melting the rear diffuser?

If anyone has links for both options that would be perfect!

I think the centre silencer is part of the whole exhaust assembly so unless you're lucky and can find one somebody has removed you're either looking at a new exhaust or maybe find a local exhaust specialist place and ask if they have or can make something that will fit. If you do find one, it'll need clamped or welded in as it will have been cut out of the old exhaust.

I can't help you with the Milltek question but I have seen a lot of negative comments about the quality of their systems for these cars. Scorpion seem to be the better one of the two and a similar price.

The diffuser should only melt if the heat shields are missing so if it hasn't melted now it should be fine with any other exhaust.

A badly fitted exhaust is going to melt the diffuser no matter what make it is if it touches, it will melt you need to know what exhaust is on the car now it would be helpful if we know were you are located as someone local may be willing to help. Buying used exhausts is a problem because they come on the car as one piece and people tend to cut them at stupid places that will not match up with yours also buying a new genuine centre section for a 197 without the cat is the way it comes is about £300 then two clamps are required the genuine ones are £18 each the standard pipe is a funny size and aftermarket clamps are either too loose or not big enough to get a good seal. So at the moment there is not enough info so we can help you picture of the exhaust would be best to see if its cut and joined in the right places I think if your messing with the senor and throttle body then its not running right at the moment.

Thank you both for your replies.
As far as I am aware it is just a standard exhaust with the center silencer delete but until I look underneath at what is actually going on it will be hard to know for sure!
I will try get some pictures as soon as I get chance - Does anyone have any pictures of what things should look like for comparison?
With regards to the MAF sensor and throttle body I was hoping to try those purely as I have the flatspot/kangarooing in 1st & second mainly when cold and have read those should help with that, I also cant see a good clean hurting anything!
Location wise I am from Shropshire,England but don't mind travelling a bit if there is anyone not too far away.

OK the guys on eBay are close to you its the full thing as long as you have a straight piece to join it your covered remember the mid section is £300 new but you said the car has the two Cats fitted the manifold and the one you see here the middle resonator can have very fine cracks as the pipe goes through it and is very hard to weld due to the difference in thick ness of the two faces.

The Official cutting point of the back box as this is a Brand new back box that I have measuring in a straight line from the seam.

Thank you.
So am I right in believing it is just the circled part I would need?

If it costs £300 for the lot would it make sense to pay a bit extra and go for a resonated Scorpion or Miltek exhaust instead? (which I assume would mean not needing to replace the Center silencer?

(sorry if these are stupid questions, I have 0 idea how exhausts work!)

Well it's each to there own you seem to not like the noise people have been complaining about drone and noise in other posts the I have a decat Miltek resonated midsection on an Akraprovic back box no drone. You just got the car check what you have got and what state it's in most noise comes from induction kits then blowing flexi joints the cracks in the mid section they only open up as the car gets hot so hard to spot cold and the pipe through can rattle when hot and be firm when cold. Yes that exhaust is expensive there was others on for as low as £60 and normally £120 but they don't come up often and are getting harder to find. You could got to one of those power flow places and they could weld in the mid box again they are a franchise and can make custom exhausts.

I'm pretty dam sure I have a spare centre box in my shed. I took it off my previous 200 back in 2014 so condition is decent.

I'm Coventry way, you can have it for free if you want. There's not much pipe left on it as it was cut very close to the box but worth taking to exhaust place and seeing if it can be used. Should only be around £60 if they can do anything with it.

As for the flat spot the centre silencer makes it quite a bit worse for sure! In fact any exhaust does. Only way to sort it is to have it mapped.

I could be wrong but I don't think the maf sensor really affects the flat spot. It only really causes hesitation and jerkiness when the car is cold. You can get brackets which apparently help. There's a guy on the FB groups but I forgot his name :worried:

Honestly that would be amazing if you still have it!
I couldn't take it for free though - I'm sure we could figure something out. (I travel down that way to Wolverhampton quite often so if you don't mind me dropping you a private message to arrange picking it up let me know)

Just to confirm you mean removing the silencer makes the flat spot worse? so hopefully adding it back should help things?

Yeah I have read into the MAF sensor and that it might be the source of the cold start kangarooing. Going to try give it all a good clean up and i have access to CNC machines with work so if that is the issue I should be able to come up with something

Letting the car idle for a minute until the revs have settled will help greatly with reducing the kangarooing. That's at least my experience.

No worries mate drop me a PM.

Yeah taking off the centre silencer definitely increases the flat spot quite a bit. Putting it back on should reduce it back to normal.

Sorry for resurrecting an old threat, but then again I didn’t want to create a new one. Anyone actually knows the size of the silencer in question i.e dimensions, how long it is etc.??

Just in case anyone else needs, these are the dimensions for the silencer:
37cm length
18cm width
11cm hight

I just need to source a silencer for my mid pipe as it’s straight through and too loud.
