cambelt question.

About 18 months ago I replaced the timing belt on my old ph2 172, using the correct tools borrowed off a friend who works at me local renault dealer. Fast forward an there now due on my 197, this time I've purchased my own set of tools from renault including, mot 1054- tdc setting pin mot 1496- camshaft timing tool mot 1801- camshaft sprocket looking tool mot- 1509-01 adaptor for 1801 Now last year on my old 172 I remember having to use tool mot 799-01 camshaft sprocket wrench to rotate the timing via the exhaust pulley but in my renault 197 workshop manual theres no mention of this, is there a need for it on the 197?

No , on these you tighten the pulleys back up after tensioning , then rotate the complete engine (instead of just pulleys on 172/182) 2 full cycles and check the tension mark again. If ok , job done , if needs adjusting , you need to repin the crank and cams and undo cam pulleys again and retension and rotate and rechech etc.
If you done the 172 ok you can do this ok.
