200: Belt service done, now I can't find reverse :(

Just had the big service completed at a main dealer yesterday, with the car being 6 years old now (56,000 on the clock). The cars been running a dream and have suffered no problems whatsoever.

Collected the car yesterday, and thought when leaving that 5th gear felt stiff (no problem, box is probably just warming up), I'm only 2 miles from the dealership so parked up for the night, drove to work today (3 miles there and back), and thought to myself again that 5th gear was feeling a tad stiff although once warm the gear felt perfectly fine.

Pulled in my drive, went to reverse into my parking space, and reverse gear was none existent (despite reversing out my parking space at work 3 miles previously!) It didn't help I was then blocking in an ambulance in my driveway, of which paramedics had to push my car into my space!

Spoken with Renault really late in the day, of which they recommended calling breakdown cover to see if it was anything obvious. The AA followed me to the dealership of which I've left the car there overnight to be looked at tomorrow!

Worrying, yet confusing times! Gearbox has ran a dream all my ownership, and feel it's too coincidental after leaving the dealership and being driven 8 miles since the belt change!

That sounds like the linkage mate. They must have fiddled with it somehow but it's out of position, it'll probably need re-adjusting only.

Take it back to the dealer if only 8 miles done they should see what's wrong they will have the mileage on file or on the paperwork most likely the selector cables have been trapped or stretched since 5th and reverse are at opposite ends and forward some cable adjustments might sort it. Give the engine a push and a pull to make sure an engine mount hasn't been left undone problem will be to cover their ass they might make something up and charge you for it. If any problems then Renault UK involved

what a shitty situation..hate stuff like that..when your car cant move and you are blocking an oncoming traffic..
as above really, take it back and let them apologise and compensate you for your trouble...sure it just the linkage though

Awkward Ross. Has to be something the dealer has done imo. Keep us posted

Bizarre, it has to be something but wouldn’t have thought the belt change would involve going near the gearbox!

Waiting for the phone call at some point today with the diagnosis, I’ll let you all know what they reckon!

Received a call from the dealership saying that no faults were found. The car was stripped down (taking the airbox/battery out) and inspected but all was reported ok!

After putting the car back together, the gearing was reporting as fine, and reverse selectable.

Took it for a good 10 mile drive, and the gearbox feels silky smooth as normal! Made sure I worked my way through the box multiple times and it didn’t skip a beat (also didn’t manage to block any ambulances reverse into drive today! So crisis averted... I hope!

Did I sleep well last night? Certainly not! Spent most of it overthinking about my newly acquired shagged gearbox, and what future battles I’ll have with Renault! Maybe I’m just an anxious kinda guy!

Just want to get through the next week with no scares, but I’m hoping that’s the BIG ONE out the way, more than happy to not deal with it again for a while!

I'll have a £1 bet with you its a simple linkage adjustment etc needed.

Sleep easy young Jedi

Exactly what my dad said when I called him! Relief if nothing else! But I’m sure you could picture my face (and heart rate) when my gears weren’t engaging haha

wonder if when they did the belt with the engine mount off the engine has tipped out of line & its pulled the linkage adjuster out causing the issue???

Yeah the dealership mentioned that they ‘had seen I’d change the engine mount / gearbox mount’ so it seems they may have been weary of it.

I reckon you may have hit the nail on the head, it would make sense!
